The issues in public education are not just due to underfunding & lack of staff

Problems exist because the system is ableist & outdated. It's the attitude that these are acceptable things to do to children who are struggling because their skills & brains are underdeveloped

Educators should stop justifying the use of seclusion & restraint in schools

They're outdated & traumatic practices that teach nothing & don't 🔽 "challenging behaviours" at all. They cause long-lasting harm and contribute to the misunderstanding & stigmatization of ND kids

SLP & OT consults

It wasn't enough

Why?

They wanted compliance & expected him to meet NT demands

There is huge irony in the mistaken belief that Autistic people are utterly inflexible when every day we advocate for our needs in an inflexible world!

Many reasonable adjustments cost very little to nothing and benefit far more than just Autistic folks.

Sweet Jesus

Accommodating DISABILITIES & differing neurotypes SHOULD be part of our culture FFS

Autistic/ND students are also trying their best to learn but the environment makes it unbelievably hard to do so

Autistic people aren’t “bad at following instructions”

Many autistic people are actually excellent at following instructions

The problem?

👉 The instructions are unclear, vague or inconsistent

What’s important is:
- clear steps
- clear expectations
- clear outcomes
- clear deadlines
