By the way, if you aren't using Home Assistant yet, now's a great time to start. You don't have to own the house you're in, you don't have to change any wiring, you don't have to do anything expensive. If you have any inexpensive old computers/laptops laying around, they're perfect for this. /cont'd
I don't appreciate being reminded about the rapid passing of time...

Quick vlog time: Why I think Home Assistant should rename "add-ons" to "apps" 🔥

The problem: newcomers see Add-ons and Integrations and have no idea which one to use. The names don't explain the difference.

Renaming Home Assistant add-ons to apps (here's why)
I opened an architecture proposal to rename Home Assistant "add-ons" to "apps"; and it's sparked quite the discussion. In this vlog, I explain why this seemingly small change actually matters for newcomers, why "add-ons" creates confusion, and what's happening in the community debate. What do you think? Apps, add-ons, or something else? Let me know in the comments! Filmed on my way to GitHub Universe 2025 ✈️ Key points: - Why new users get confused between add-ons and integrations - How "apps" creates a clearer mental model - Zero functional changes, just better naming - Community alternatives being discussed 🔔 Enjoyed the video? We don't just have more contributors than other smart home platforms, we are in the top 10 of projects with more contributors than ANYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD.

Home Assistant is the most private and most powerful smart home you can get, and the one fastest growing and powering the most innovation.
😯 We did it again - we made the @github.com Octoverse report as a top open source project on GitHub! 🥳

We can't understate it: it's because of the community that we accomplished this. Thousands of you contributed to this achievement - here's to you! #OpenSource🍻

Eight Sleep smartbeds users had a bad night on Monday when a major outage of Amazon Web Services (AWS) caused their beds to malfunction. Some were left with the bed’s heat blasting. One woman said her bed went haywire and she had to unplug it from the wall.

When Amazon Web Services went offline, people lost control of their cloud-connected smart beds, getting stuck in reclined positions or roasting with the heat turned all the way up.

One of the great things about working at an open source organization is that everyone here likes to experiment and build cool stuff on top of our products.

Case in point? Connect ZWA-2 was launched just 2 months ago… and now there’s a new experiment for you:

Connect ZWA-2 anywhere: Use Z-Wave over Wi-Fi or PoE

Smart device updates are essential for cybersecurity. Consumer Reports wants to ensure that smart device companies have to tell consumers how long they plan to make these updates available. Because today that information isn't always available.
