Well my larger point is that Thiel, "brilliant" entrepreneur, political theorist, and theologian is succumbing to pareidolia: seeing patterns where they ain't. I guess a billionaire can get away with it.

My son who knows One Piece laughed and said Thiel is cherry-picking from a larger storyline.

It's weird to hear it from Marc Benioff though. I didn't have that good an impression of either him or Salesforce, and it doesn't surprise me that he'd be sucking up to Trump the way many rich people are now. But you can do that without demanding National Guard in San Francisco.

I wish people would quit it with the kneejerk China-bashing, and Democrats do it too. Yes, Xi is awful, but that nuance rarely comes out. China is a great nation.

If we really don't want Xi taking over the global South, maybe we should not have unilaterally given up all our soft power.

That's a really fucked up argument. I am of the rather boring view that politics should be framed democratically, and we're now seeing the results of the Citizens United decision. Nobody even questions the right of big money to buy elections anymore.
