Last field trip in Zurich with students in urban planning at Uni Lausanne

Zurich is a fascinating city (e.g. the financial capital of Switzerland has 25% of its housing stock which is non profit)

This year I noticed for the first time the cyclists on the building of the urban planning department!

Motorways are cumbersome. Zurich shows 4 ways of dealing with them...
😱 Finding space over a river (that's so 60s...)
😮‍💨 Stoping building them abruptly (better late than never?)
😀 Covering them with a park (Ueberlandpark)
😀 Turning them into a cycling tunnel

Neuchatel 1971: voters reject 2 motorway projects because of major impacts (filling in the port, destruction of public spaces, etc.).

Interestingly the struggle led to the constitution of one of the precursors of green parties (Mouvement populaire pour l'environnement – MPE)

🚲 Transformed into a #cycling tunnel after a petition of cycling advocates and a popular vote. Inaugurated 3 months ago
🚲 350,000 bikes. 4000 a day!
🚲 2 "velostations" directly connected to the train station

40,000 people primarily spoke Romansh, mainly in Grisons (the region on the map)
