James Baldwin wrote that the real tragedy of our lives is this: fear of our own morality leads us to do all sorts of (and this is my paraphrase) destructive stupid shit. We’re witnessing this truth every day: an old man with all the power in the world destructively acting out his fear of death

This is an extraordinary speech, all the more so because it was written by the Prime Minister himself. It says something about how far we’ve fallen that neither in substance nor in tone could this speech have been delivered by the current occupant of the White House.

Marie Antoinette had a peasant village, the Hameau de la Reine (The Queen's Hamlet), built on the grounds of Versailles, where she and ladies of her court would role play at being peasants……

My career has been in criminal justice: formerly public defender and innocence protection attorney, and now chief prosecutor. Two things I’ve learned: full police power let loose on one group eventually turns on everyone; full police power is easy to turn on but nearly impossible to turn off.

Notice the exact same model that’s long been used to dehumanize Black victims of state violence is now being deployed to dehumanize Renee Good, a White woman. We can’t pick & choose who counts as human and who is worthy of our care and concern because “none of us are free until all of us are free.”

A lesson for our times: The “ideal Ayran baby” worshiped in Nazi Germany was a in fact a Jewish child.

Our Solar System is orbiting the center of our Galaxy at about 220 km/s so in 2025 we collectively traveled something like 7 billion kilometers across the Milky Way. Once in a while, when you have a moment, it’s worthwhile to take a look around, see where you are, and appreciate how far you’ve come.

The idea that there are Americans who are more “real” than others has always been a part of political conversation but it’s wild that it’s now mainstream to talk about so-called heritage Americans, which seems to be no more and no less than plain racism.

I should no longer be surprised at this point and yet it never ceases to amaze me how nowadays people like this gentleman equate wealth with virtue and having a fat bank account with providing value for your community.
Lutnick: "Now these people make a gift to the United States of America of $1 million, so you know these are the best people coming in. This is raising the value of the people coming into this country."

There are days when it feels like as a nation we are trapped inside a house full of (mostly but not all) men forcing us to deal with their pathologies and their fear of dying.

There’s nothing like a smart wealthy dude who just “discovered” an issue generations of Black folks, activists, academics, and journalists have shouted from the rooftops since forever. In the year of our lord 2025, this man is “shocked” to learn there is such a thing as mass incarceration

This: “Hope … is the ability to imagine a better world it possible and then to build it brick by brick…”
"Hope is not blind optimism or uncritical belief in a political savior. Hope, to me, means the ability to imagine a better world is possible and then work to build it brick by brick. It is, as @prisonculture.bsky.social says, not an emotion but a discipline—one we must practice every single day."

Tonight is a great night for Virginia democrats. A lot of folks worked hard to get us here but it has to be said that @bluevirginia.bsky.social has been a key media outlet showing how tell the story of how the democratic party can fight and win.
Does this qualify as "blue tsunami" territory? ;) bluevirginia.us/2025/11/live... h/t @notlarrysabato (great graphics!)

Tonight’s democratic sweep of the governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, and state house in Virginia, governor in New Jersey, and Mayor in New York City shows a broad coalition devoted to democracy, good government and the rule of law can win.

Because this is a pending case I will make no comments other than, as our brief stated, that an impartial criminal investigation should always be balanced with respect for constitutional rights.
