Le développement ne transmet pas juste la variation à la sélection naturelle, il canalise l’évolution, facilitant de grands changements mais pouvant aussi limiter les options futures. D’où l’intérêt de croiser données fossiles & actuelles pour lier micro- & macroévolution. 21/21

Malgré l’astuce développementale des campagnols pour pousser les limites de la complexité dentaire des rongeurs, celle-ci reste limitée. Peu d’espèces sont allées jusqu’à 11 cuspides, et aller plus loin pourrait être de plus en plus difficile. 19/21

… il y a un bémol ! Arriver aux dents les plus complexes (≥10 cuspides) prend du temps, aussi bien dans le registre fossile qu’au cours du développement. 18/21

Et la taille ? Qd on cultive des m1 de campagnols in vitro celles prélevées plus tôt s’allongent moins et développent moins de cuspides. Enfin, les dents + étroites ont tendance à développer + de cuspides en s’allongeant : le développement reflète les tendances évolutives ! 14/21

C’est l’accélération précoce du développement de la m1 (une hétérochronie développementale) qui permet la croissance rapide de + de cuspides chez les campagnols, alors que chez les souris, il faut commencer + tôt la croissance de la molaire pour obtenir + de cuspides. ⏲ 13/21
