She often said she was haunted by these echoes from the past and, in 1980, after suffering a severe nervous breakdown, she destroyed all of her audio equipment and extensive notes. Doris lived the remainder of her life as a recluse and hoarder of discarded toys.
Doris Ager was an amateur folklorist and collector of stone tape recordings. Using equipment invented by herself, she travelled all across the British Isles, capturing phantom voices and sounds from ruins, dry stone walls, abandoned houses and ancient monoliths.
