After the snowstorm, two years ago. I wasn’t out to take photos, but I had a camera in my backpack — just in case. Then suddenly, the clouds dropped below me, the sky cleared, and a single lenticular cloud drifted above Mont Blanc.

Away from the main trails, the sequoias are still immense and humbling. Back in 2009, we wandered through these quiet woods, feeling small among the giants. The exposure might not be perfect, but this remains one of my favorite photos — a simple, candid moment that just happened.

That was actually my second visit to Zabriskie Point in Death Valley National Park, back in the summer of 2009. I had already fallen in love with the place on my first trip, and despite the brutal heat, I couldn’t resist coming back.

We were in the middle of summer, and temperatures were already unbearable not long after sunrise. I remember we camped nearby and woke up very early just to catch a glimpse of this surreal landscape before the heat made it impossible to explore.

This overlook is well known for its soft colours at sunrise and the wide open view of the badlands. But for me, it was always the shapes and textures that captured my attention — these ridges carved by erosion, like waves frozen in time.

Devils Tower, 2009.
That summer was all about climbing. A 7-week road trip across the US, chasing granite and cracks, sleeping in campgrounds or wherever we could find space. Photography was more of a side project back then — I had my first DSLR with me, but most of the time I only took it out after the climbs were done. Or before.

I had no real knowledge of technique or editing, but I was starting to pay attention — to light, to composition, to the moments that linger after the adrenaline fades.

Climbing Devils Tower was a dream. The approach through the pine forest, the sudden view of this massive volcanic plug rising from the plains — and then the routes, classic and exposed, full of history and texture. We topped out and we were alone on the summit for a moment. This photo came later, during a quiet walk near the base, when the clouds were just right.

Still summer 2009. 10,000 miles across the western US in just seven weeks — a wild mix of discovery, climbing, hiking… and photography. Most of the pictures weren’t that great, but this road trip gave me the spark. A camera in hand, a car, and a tent — it was the perfect starting point.

Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado.
I hiked for three or four days, escaping the crowds as soon as I left the parking lot. Elks were everywhere, but the highlight was this tiny, elusive creature — the pika. High up in the mountains, shy but curious. I’d never seen one before, and this one let me stay close for quite a while.

Death Valley National Park.
Showing my friends the dunes… in the middle of summer. Not the best idea. It was over 32°C at night, and we barely slept. At sunrise, we wandered into the dunes — groggy but inspired. This was one of the first times I felt something shift in how I composed and saw light and shape, especially in the desert.

Near Sequoia National Park.
I’ve returned to this spot several times. Sometimes with a camera, sometimes without — just to enjoy the view in silence.

Near Devil’s Tower, Wyoming.
Either just before or just after a long climb — I don’t remember — but I do remember these guys. Prairie dogs everywhere, right by the campground. They were so used to people that I could sit just a few meters away and take my time framing the shot. I had so much fun hanging out with them.

2009. My second US road trip — from Houston to Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada. Stops along the way included Meteor Crater in Arizona before reaching California’s granite walls and sunsets. A journey across deserts and mountains.

At the end of the day, the Sierra Nevada gave me one of those moments you can’t plan. After hours on the road, we hiked to a lookout just in time to watch the sun go down. The ridges faded into layers of orange and blue, the air was hazy, and everything grew quiet.

I set my camera on a rock, but most of the time I just sat there with my friends. Sunsets in the mountains are different — not the loud show you sometimes get on the ocean, but a slow fading, ridge after ridge, until it’s dark.

It wasn’t dramatic compared to Yosemite or the desert, but it’s one of those memories that comes back quickly when I look at the photo. A small, simple reward at the end of a long day.

Arriving in Yosemite felt like finally reaching the heart of the road trip. After endless desert and highways, suddenly there were granite walls, pine trees, and the famous dome standing at the end of the valley.

Of course, I took the classic shots — who doesn’t? But on this Belvedere I stopped for something smaller: a handful of flowers growing out of cracks in the granite. Behind them, Half Dome stood massive and eternal. That contrast stayed with me. Fragile life holding on for a short season, and timeless, steep stone watching from behind. Yosemite is full of big views, but sometimes the details speak louder.

We didn’t go up the normal way. Instead, we climbed Half Dome through Snake Dike, one of the long granite ridges on the side of the mountain. It’s not a hard climb technically, but it’s exposed, and the feeling of moving up that endless grey slab with so much air around you is unforgettable.

After hours on the ridge, we reached the summit plateau just as the light was shifting. From up there, Yosemite opened in every direction — domes, cliffs, and the valley far below.

We went down the famous cables, which felt almost as intimidating as climbing up. Gripping the metal, stepping carefully, looking back at the line of hikers behind us. The whole loop made the day one of the most intense and memorable of the trip.

First real stop on the way west: Meteor Crater in Arizona. I had seen photos before, but standing at the rim was something else. A massive hole in the middle of the desert, created 50,000 years ago by an asteroid maybe 50 meters wide. One second of impact, and now a crater more than a kilometer across.

Today there’s nothing but wind, desert, and emptiness. Hard to connect the calm with the violence that created it. It was a strange but powerful beginning to the trip — a reminder that landscapes have stories way older than us.
