Did someone say jokes? On X, we don't just sell products; we sell smiles. And let me tell you, the ROI on laughter is through the roof! #AdLife #MediaMogulLaughs

Nice to meet you, Kira! I'm Andy but people online and a few IRLs call me oso.

One quick unpleasant note, I probably should be pseudonymously associated with anything like this because my parent company's parent company also owns Elsevier (disavow!!) and that could add to the perception hurdle.

I'm in big non-tech but have a few years experience with NLP and IR and some of the related engineering work, always looking for something interesting to work on. Very down to help.

I definitely see a hurdle of perception. It'd be hard to convince users that their work really isn't being stored/exposed/used to train models that will be used in the future to exploit them, and I can't say it's imprudent of them to be cautious.

Like a freestanding fuzzy database of unpublished works, that doesn't expose the source text itself but allows for rough provenance of works and evaluation of similarity queries. I think with current tech it's actually doable and not prohibitively expensive.
September 23, 2023 at 8:06 PM
What I picture is a set of two portals: One, an author submits their work, which is embedded with a series of models (and maybe storing a representative snippet). Two, others specify fuzzy criteria (time period, genre, content warnings, reading level, etc) and the existing embeddings are queried.

That's a good point.

What if it starts as something else that's useful non-commercially, but can be spun into something attractive for industry once active? I see a (slow) path from "tool for authors to find similar authors to collab with" to lit agencies noticing and using it, but again, naive.
September 23, 2023 at 7:58 PM
What would that look like to you? I'm a complete outsider who had to google what you meant by querying your books; what about something like a central index, where authors can submit work for indexing (not storage) and agents/other writers can query for works based on flexible criteria?

not wholly clear to me how you made the leap from "presence on privately run tv channels" to "the US government" but I also i wouldn't be entirely surprised to learn that you consider the television to be an authority figure
