Did you hear about a crash yesterday that killed a 73-year-old man in North County? Maybe you saw a reprinted press release. Maybe you saw a quick blurb describing the driver as "inattentive" a straight reprint from the MSHP. And I'm mad about it. I'm sick of local news coverage of traffic violence.
I am writing to express serious concern about your coverage of the recent crash in North County in which a man was killed. Your article (“Pedestrian killed in North County crash”) reads exactly as a copy-and-paste of the Missouri State Highway Patrol report, without additional inquiry or context. This was a man’s life and he deserved more than a generic “First Alert 4 Staff” byline attached to a reprinted press release. The words you choose shape public understanding of responsibility, risk, and what can be done to prevent further deaths. At best, the reporting was lazy; at worst, it misled your audience. Here's why I'm concerned: Passive framing: “Traveled off the right side of the roadway” makes it sound as though the car veered off on its own, removing the driver’s agency and responsibility. You don't investigate whether the driver was ticketed, obeyed traffic laws, or if the case is still under investigation. Stenography: Terms like “inattentive” are repeated from the highway patrol report, when even a basic look at a map shows that the driver had to be doing more than just being inattentive. The damage on the ground is proof enough alone. Missed reporting: Social media is full of witness accounts from people who saw the crash and triaged the victim. We don’t even know if the victim was walking or waiting for the bus. You missed the story here and the community impact. People had the victim's blood on their hands and you printed a press release. Public Health Concern: Traffic violence is not an isolated event. At a minimum, coverage should include basic data about pedestrian deaths, local crash trends, and the systemic dangers faced by people who walk, bike, or ride the bus in our region. This isn't an accident, it's a public health crisis. By First Alert 4 Staff Published: Sep. 11, 2025 at 10:26 PM CDT|Updated: 11 hours ago ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - A pedestrian was killed Thursday morning in a crash in north St. Louis County. The crash happened just after 9 a.m. on North Lindbergh Boulevard just north of Cougar Drive. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 73-year-old man was struck. He was taken to an area hospital via helicopter. The man was pronounced dead at the hospital. MSHP says a 24-year-old man from Florissant was inattentive while driving and traveled off the right side of the roadway and hit the victim.
