I would just like to say that for fun I just raced ChatGPT to find 200 words of edits in a 1900 word piece and I have already done it and it's still going. So that's the last time I ask it for that.

20 years ago today Heth and I remortgaged our house and Incorporated Bluemoose Books as a publishing company.

Many thanks to the wonderful librarians, booksellers, reviewers and readers who've promoted and hand sold our books.

Magic!

My thing about being Lancastrian the same way Tony Soprano is Italian:

I’m Northern like Tony Soprano was Italian. My Mum is from Lancashire but moved to Somerset when she was a child. She came with an accent (mostly intact 50 years on) and a fully formed Northern ide…

Chuckled at 'Lust for Life singer Iggy Pop, 78...' in some agency copy today. Classic journalese (see also 'Hey Jude hitmakers The Beatles'). 'Eeh, Mr Pop at number 3, he's 78 but he's still got a lust for life. He's an example to us all.'

Ooh Cuthbert, I already have a foot cushion and grapes. But I would really like some muffin tweezers for Christmas. I see you are perusing Sir Reginald Argos' latest booklet. He has an excellent selection of muffin tweezers. #girlsowncc

Ooh, I thought Belle & Sebastian's Boy With The Arab Strap on Mike's Rebellious Jukebox @salfordbeerfest.bsky.social was Chicory Tip's Son of My Father. I'm sorry hipsters. I apologise groovers. I'm still hip 'n' happenin'.

Supping Parkin Ticket at the mighty @salfordbeerfest.bsky.social while Human League's Being Boiled is being played by Mike's Rebellious Jukebox. Cheers to beer fest organiser Jim. (Storing up Parkin Ticket for a headline, but parkin stories are rare these days).

Finished Viv Albertine's To Throw Away Unopened a few weeks ago, but still thinking about her parents' divorce diaries. Her folks were advised to write them by their solicitors and VA read them after they both died. Who else has their parents' diaries? Viv makes the most of them in an ace memoir.

Fancy running a Sam Smith's pub? This is the Commercial, Huddersfield, a beautiful building with a soulless Smith's vibe and bog standard ales. I get the convo in pubs thing, but the place needs a jukey/bands to give it a bit of life. Terms seem generous though.

Perfume/aftershave ads - various animals, heavily edited smiling, nowt about smells. How about Depp wafting a lamb & mint pie instead of playing guitar in front of a puma?

Painting of newspaper reader on the wall of the Bulkeley Hotel, Beaumaris. I like it, although his get-up makes it look as though newspapers died out 80 years ago.

A beer festival in Wakefield is offering 'five hours of full-throttle, all-in, party-mode madness' and confetti cannons. That will go down well with grumpy old alehounds in stained anoraks with newspapers in their pockets (me).

Another Beatles book. I'm Beatled out. The latest authors must be scraping the barrel for minor facts and adding a dollop of conjecture. 'In 1967, Ringo found a shilling down the sofa. A penny for his thoughts? He'd had no shilling for the meter in 1953 and now he could afford central heating.'

Back cover of 1973 Giles annual (collection in The King's Head, Hudds). Used to get these every Crimbo as a nipper. This cartoon is at odds with the usual topical stuff Carl Giles did. Gran character was my favourite.

The Violent Femmes' Add It Up is playing in the mighty County pub in Hudds. Don't listen to them much now, but their whiny boy skiffle was huge for me in the 80s, far more important than The Smiths. I found Mozzer intimidating as a youth - he was the sort of lad who'd scoff at your pencil case.
