Preseason games are normally not this competitive. What a fun first half. The Rockets beat up on the Pelicans last season, are poised to be one of the best teams in the West this year and have shown their typical toughness tonight, but New Orleans has met their tenacity and grit.

Jose Alvarado and Amen Thompson got into a scuffle. There's a stoppage in play as the referees take a look at this. Thompson appeared to have taken a swing at Jose after Alvarado charged him/knocked him to the ground.

Nod. To single one person out, Herb's been aggressive, more than we've seen in the past. Shot hasn't dropped tonight so far, but it feels he's carrying a different confidence/mindset -- I love it. Not coincidentally, have heard Herb's been a rockstar in preseason practices.

Jose Alvarado went down after a collision, where it appeared an opponent’s leg connected near his right knee. He was on the floor for a bit as a Pelicans trainer examined the area. Eventually Alvarado got up and walked off gingerly under his own power but didn’t appear happy heading for locker room.

I'm in the paper today discussing why deploying the national guard to New Orleans is an unnecessary step that will hurt local businesses. I don't mention in the piece, but it will also be expensive and polling shows it's already very unpopular.

Jeremiah Fears struggled in his preseason NBA debut: 7 points (3-15 FG, 0-6 3FG), 5 turnovers and 4 personal fouls. Jumper didn’t fall at all and he was overly aggressive at times, driving it too deep without creating a good look. That said, he’s 18 years old — and the talent/confidence IS evident.
