I guess the most practical read (though I really think it was just words), is that we should build our own mutually assured destruction? Which has some, uh, implications
ohdeerthermos.bsky.social
It's weird how many credentialed people have more or less 0 theory of power, but really love ritual. The implication is that a bunch of people doing other things could just ward off authoritarianism?
ohdeerthermos.bsky.social
What's frustrating is that "be careful who you reply to" is really a thing. Vetting who you engage with is pretty frustrating

To lean into it, open-faced sandwiches are more of a colloquialism because they involve multiple slices of bread. They aren't sandwiches which have stacked pieces of bread
ohdeerthermos.bsky.social
It's probably too much work, but I wonder if you could search the National Archives for reports at the time? I know the Allies were making on the ground effort to elicit sabotage
ohdeerthermos.bsky.social
I think the idea, if I'm understanding it correctly, is there'd be less of an issue of Harris was one party, Cheney another, and people who hate Cheney in a third. So it lets everyone keep each other at arms length

I was right. Frankly, I barely remember that summer and did very poorly, I was exhausted. That internship could very easily gotten my foot into a lot. I don't regret anything, but it's just a reality I and many people in tech dealt with
ohdeerthermos.bsky.social
Ex: In school, I had the opportunity to do a very interesting internship that would have looked great on my resume. I turned it down because to make any internship work I was working nights at the university in exchange for housing. I didn't think I could handle it, and took a very bland internship.

I'm happy with what I'm doing and I'm good at it. But I'm doing X and someone else is doing Y because of when they got access to tech and technical education
ohdeerthermos.bsky.social
I don't say this to be overly critical, but a lot of tech really values things that are absolutely tied to what you had access to when, and we have fewer doors throughout your career because of it.
ohdeerthermos.bsky.social
Sometimes the soapbox gets taken out of storage for you, and people post things that illustrate how closely success in tech is tied to the circumstances of your birth

I guess I'm trying to square how the size of the coalition like this would be different from the current one. You could pick up some of the left/right edges, but I'm a little cynical on that: the issue there is that they aren't currently competitive and aren't joining without power, which is ceding
ohdeerthermos.bsky.social
Got it. I think it's hard to be in coalition and cede nothing, though. A lot of the politics aren't discrete, and the number of people you could pick up without some trades doesn't seem to be much.

*I feel like that came off as a gotcha, sorry. It's a genuine concern about some of the implications
ohdeerthermos.bsky.social
I suppose to challenge it directly, and the prof is probably the better person to ask, but I'm not sure how practically this isn't backdooring some things into the coalition
ohdeerthermos.bsky.social
I get the idea, but I'm a little on the fence. Mapping our current polity on to a multi-party system doesn't change the math at all. While I get that there are current non-MAGA Republicans that still vote R, I'm not convinced that having their own party would provide us with an out we'd tolerate
ohdeerthermos.bsky.social
Also, given the circumstances, what would his alternatives look like? Pass law with no electoral authority? Protest with no cause?
ohdeerthermos.bsky.social
As an aside, I think practically this is always less about needing clear evil and more about stories that lack a proper foil for evil characters.
ohdeerthermos.bsky.social
The goal of a space should be letting people exist without hate, not telling them to try another door if tolerance would shake things up too much
ohdeerthermos.bsky.social
A problem I've always had with the analogy is that irl it confuses what's tolerated by the in-group vs having a tolerant space
ohdeerthermos.bsky.social
Also, it's important to note that, unlike everyone else, Harker really is just-some-guy. The fact that he and Mina are critical to defeating ancient evil is pretty awesome

I think the challenge people have with the book re: horror, is that the story peels back the menace of Dracula until we see what he really is. A dangerous but frail pest

there's so many subtle details in dracula (the novel). one of the major hidden ones is that dracula is contained in his castle by the transylvanians at the start of the novel. he's hemmed up there. he can't really travel freely even in his own country
ohdeerthermos.bsky.social
I feel like Johnathan Harker is the most underrated character in the book. He's the only character that survives Dracula alone and without preparation. Him being ultimately scared by the experience helps keep Dracula a true threat. Adaptations that make him a weenie do the character a disservice

I genuinely think a lot of these guys thing "doing a Fox/Newsmax hit" once a week is an optimal amount of work
