My quote of the day

We have managed to unite a country tearing down the barriers the regime built to divide us. Ours is a fight of a nation united against a criminal tyranny, in defense of its human rights, freedom, and democracy. That is why we have no alternative but victory

that scientific funding should be based on scientific merit alone.

In our view, America’s leadership in science and innovation depends on independent thinking and open competition for excellence. In that free marketplace of ideas, the people of MIT gladly compete with the very best, ...

A strong statement from MIT President Sally Kornbluth rejecting Trump's "compact for higher education." I hope other higher ed leaders follow this example.

I am deeply saddened and angered by news that more NIH RIFs may happen next week. This is unacceptable, especially after NIH staff have worked nights & weekends to dig out from the backlog created by this admin's incompetence.

Tell your Congress people NIH needs its staff to keep delivering cures

My last grant was an R25 focused on introducing undergraduates to aging research to motivate them to address these gaps, be it in research or clinical careers. It was terminated b/c “DEI is bad.”
Excellent news! Congratulations Cheryl!

📣 New preprint from the SCIMaP team!

Across three studies, we show that communicating the economic impact of NIH funding cuts—especially with interactive quizzes and maps—decreases approval and motivates action to oppose the cuts, across the political spectrum. 🧵 1/8

But yeah, reading that also made me feel even more grateful for preprints!

My reason for sharing this is not that editors make wrong decisions, but that such long delays in publications also delay other people from building on work, or could lead to people just giving up and working on other projects instead. That seems like it would've been very unfortunate in this case
Congratulations to all !!!

My new @science.org editorial on the role of scientists in defending democracy is out today. As authoritarianism takes hold in the US, we must fight for the democratic principles that enable a free society and scientists have a key role. I hope you'll join us.

That soundtrack is as good as it gets. I'm also remembering how much that movie influenced David Lynch and everything that follows.

Over 20 years after Julius’s lab and mine cloned TRPM8, it is rewarding to see this science helping patients. The TRPM8 agonist Tryptyr treats dry eye by increasing tear production. A reminder that NIH-funded curiosity-driven research translates to medicines.
