#HistNursing Advent day 10. Historically 19C nursing leaders didn’t believe that nurses needed to know anatomy & physiology to be ‘good’ nurses, thank goodness that changed & today’s image is of a cardiac anatomy class in the 1960s including a sheep’s heart. Note the uniforms worn in class

#HistNursing Advent day 8. A momentous time for nursing in Palmerston North - white shoes and stockings were out and sensible brown shoes & brown stockings became de Rigueur . For many years a shoe & stocking allowance was issued. What are your shoe memories?

Day 7 #HistNursing Advent. These 2 items below to Sister Mabel Crook- see pinned post for book. She was sniped off Gallipoli on a hospital ship, 50 years later the NZ army did not believe she was there -she fought her case, got her medal & attended the commemorations #pilgrimage

Day6 #His Advent Calendar -when NZANS 1st joined up for WW1 they were not issued identity discs- many nurses had their own made from local coins. This belonged to Blanche Huddleston who was a nurse anaesthetic. The discs came in after the loss of 10 nurse on the Marquette.

Day6 #His Advent Calendar -when NZANS 1st joined up for WW1 they were not issued identity discs- many nurses had their own made from local coins. This belonged to Blanche Huddleston who was a nurse anaesthetic. The discs came in after the loss of 10 nurse on the Marquette.

Advent day 3. #HistNursing - I flew up country in 2021 to look at the long lost nurse training archives in Palmerston North. The huge bound volume contained all the student details but it was so water damaged I couldn’t use - long forgotten in storage

🧵Meet NZANS Phoebe Reynolds- 22/87 died aged 46 in 1923. She had TB for 5 years,, her nursing obituary is 😢 - despite a lung haemorrhage she carried on nursing due to influx of patients. paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/periodicals/KT… she was invalided home & cared by family. No photos😢

23 October 1915 the TS Marquette was torpedoed off Salonika. On board was No 1 NZSH. 10 NZANS lost their lives, 22 NZEF & 135 others. We remember them today nzhistory.govt.nz/media/video/ma… Marquette Great War Story | NZ History they are buried at Mikra Thessaloniki or in ocean😢🇳�#HistNursingng

The day job has been very full on this semester & this was the end of a very intensive block course looking at family & community health in NZ with a cohort of great health professionals from a range of disciplines - it’s a good feeling when months of planning comes together in a course. #academic

Update on my #WW1 nurse death certs research - almost finished downloading, I do a bunch squeezed in around regular academic and home stuff. Some have been challenging to find even though army records give date & location of death in NZ - I’m not reading any until I’ve got them all!
