Taking the new Blender beta-version for a spin.
This sunflare-visualization needs a lot of work still, but being able to store arbitrary data such as electric fields in Volumes/Grids now is fascinating.

Gimp does have quite some features, it did update recently-ish, so yes, might be worth checking out, even though admittedly many features are buried in a complicated interface.

Well, not sure it is an apt recommendation, but for myself, i will probably fall back to GIMP for layered raster-imaged editing and Inkscape for vector-art, both of these being free open-source applications.

While technically quite capable, both of them unfortunately have peculiar User-Interfaces.

In general it was fun to talk about my story-setting in general, i mostly do this in the form of vignettes for art i commission. At the same time i realised my limits; being a hobbyist-writer/artist moderates my urge to improve. I write/worldbuild mostly for recreation und fun.

It has been interesting indeed! Writing about a place that is that much important in my canon, yet only has a tertiary role in my current narrations. Last time i directly used Cantarval was in an ancient setting, so it was nice to showcase it's modern variant as well.

I did learn quite some things making this in Blender. And i am not 100% satisfied with this, especially the portal itself looks too boring, but i could not get the stone-texture right. I am afraid i have lost my touch for detail really.

The prominence of Cantarval and the portal-coast can be seen when looking at road-signs, used as a primary destination/landmark, even for small roads like displayed here, on a rarely used portal on Kanesyn leading to Akarion.

Even though this is an entirely whimsical idea, somehow this turned into one of my better material-works within Blender. Most of the structure of the fruit has been done via material-displacement in fact.

Recently, a few timelimes have begun growing between the vertical farms and near the highways and it's anomalous fruit(see attached infographic) have found their way into a few menus already. Cantarval is undecided what do about this, given the partially unwanted temporal effects of this fruit

Timelimes are an anomalous species of limes that possess various intertemporal traits. It's exact origin is unknown, as there are numerous subspecies adapted to various climates throughout the Seven Worlds.

The most prominent feature of timelimes is that they cause unpleasant stomach-symptoms about 2 days before they are eaten. The exact mechanism is not well understood, neither is how such a trait could have evolved. They also feature a characteristic sour-bitter taste that, without refinement, is often considered unpleasant. Sometimes it is described as "tasting good, but in reverse".

Despite the unpleasant symptoms prior to consumption, timelimes do have beneficial effects as well, manifesting as reversing some long-term health impacts, such as healing scars and damage done by diseases, even degenerative ones.

In contrast to regular lime-species, timelimes have a very rugged shape, featuring a characterstic twist of the structure in the middle-section. This makes it harder to peel, or to create zest from the rind.

Before the fruits are ripe for consumption, timelimes possess an unexplained spatial-distortion-field around their middle-section, visibly bending light in random directions, while also dispersing wave-lengths. This field vanishes just slightly before they are harvested, probably a result of their intertemporal features.
