Recruitment doesn't just cost money, it costs valuable time and energy too. Investing in staff wellbeing can reduce time and money spent worrying about and actioning recruitment and can improve staff effectiveness and productivity too.

Done right - Money spent on staff wellbeing is very well spent

Do your staff feel safe to tell you when they don't agree with you? The last time you experienced challenge or push back on an idea, how did you react? This is me holding a out a hand of support. It's hard but we must allow challenge in the work place - it benefits everyone.

Most leaders guess what is wrong for one (or more) of the following reasons,
1 - their budgets are too low to outsource
2 - they don't know there is another way
3 - thinking they can do it themselves
4 - being scared of what they will say if they ask them
I can help you with all these!

I have a bit of an issue with this kind of thing. I'm all for thinking outside the box and education can learn a lot from other professions. But, are Amol Rajam and Hannah Fry really going to be able to give your the help you need for your school?

Am I wrong?

👏👏👏👏
#AdventWellbeing Day 13. Schools with a good wellbeing culture will have a communication protocol where there's no intrusion from email or other messaging.

Those without will have staff hypervigilant to what that Saturday or Sunday evening email may contain.

How about we work harder on retaining the amazing and brilliant staff we already have?

Staff conflicts drain so much of your time and energy as a leader. Putting the work in early and preventing it from getting out of hand can help future you as well as them.

At this time of year, if it’s not essential, take it off the calendar.

No long briefings, no unnecessary meetings, no last-minute “quick tasks.”

Give people the gift of time.

I'm going to respectfully disagree. I think the bigger the MAT gets the less voices we hear in education and it become very autocratic.

Why England only needs 400 academy trusts
If we want a trust-led system that works for pupils, staff, communities and the taxpayer, we need to drastically reduce trust numbers, argues Mark McCourt

I'm still sending Christmas cards. It's an important part of connection for me at this time of year.

Yes, it's expensive. But I choose to do this rather than other things as I know how much is means to people.
Happy #NationalChristmasCardDay
Fun Factlets;
📮 The 1st commercial Christmas card was commissioned by Sir Henry Cole & designed by John Callcott Horsley in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 in 1843 & showed 3 family generations raising a toast to the card's recipient.
📮 Queen Victoria was the 1st monarch to send a Christmas card.

Leaders often think they know how staff are feeling - until they see anonymous feedback.

That should be scary though.

The truth gives you clarity, direction, and a starting point.

You can’t fix what you can’t see.

This is great news, but I agree there is still a way to go.

Reducing workload can be overwhelming as it usually involves extra work to begin with, but it is worth it.

My tip - ask staff every few weeks, "What have you done this week that you felt was unnecessary?" and then work to reduce that.

Teacher Workload is Improving!

But, we are still haemorrhaging 40,000 teachers, every year.

The 2025 report offers a glimmer of progress, not a turning point. ❌

Oh wow, I would have loved this!
Cadbury Milk Tray Bar (1947-1981): A massive milk chocolate bar, made in a special mold that featured 14 individual pieces of chocolate, all connected, and each with a different filling. It was essentially an entire box of chocolates in bar form, available only in the U.K.

30 mins walk, 199 houses lit for Christmas! That's a lot of joy being spread.
This house's decoration made me smile a lot.
