lets say a wizard has cursed you with a lot of money. you are going to become permanently brain damaged simply by being in possession of so much money. the only way out of it is to spend a lot of money on something ridiculous and not at all useful

what would you buy to break the curse?

In light of everything happening, I wrote about how the KKK in the 1920s felt unstoppable, about the people that fought against them anyway, and about how fascism always fails. dansinker.com/posts/202…

A true story from 1928 with a few artistic embellishments.
Part 1 🧵
(Alt-text for the first image contains the entire comic)
PANEL 1
Alfredo's sat at a soda bar with Jack being his bartender.

JACK: Looks like someone’s had a long day.

AL: And how!

PANEL 2
JACK: In that case, how about a nice, refreshing whiskey highball?

AL: Whiskey? The real deal?

JACK: Nothing but the best for my most loyal customer!

PANEL 3A
AL: Very well. Make it a double.

PANEL 3B
INSPECTOR DILLON: Excuse me…

PANEL 4A
INSPECTOR DILLON: What are you going to buy with that money, sir?
PANEL 4B
Alfredo notices 15c sandwiches on the menu.

PANEL 5
AL: Sandwiches.

INSPECTOR DILLON: Two dollars’ worth of sandwiches?

AL: That’s right. I’m hungry.

PANEL 6A
JACK: This here’s old “Sandwich Slugger” Al - always eats at least a dozen of things! What a card, am I right?
PANEL 6B
Jack turns to Al with a darkened expression.
JACK: Are you out of your mind?! There’s no way you can-

AL: Keep ‘em coming, barkeep.

Following panels feature Al demolishing a tower of sandwiches, until one last bite remains.

PANEL 9
AL: …I think this will hold me until supper.

With that, Al faints and falls on the ground with a thud.

PANEL 11
JACK: Al, you idiot! You know processed meat gives you indigestion!
Why’d you do it, Al?

Don’t leave me. Not like this!

PANEL 12
INSPECTOR DILLON (OFF PANEL): Ahem.

PANEL 13
INSPECTOR DILLON: As much as we’re impressed - and slightly horrified - by your clientele’s appetite, we do have a search to conduct.

INSPECTOR BYRD: Well, I’ll be! Canadian whiskey! The boss is gonna love this.

PANEL 14
Shot of Jack, handcuffed in a police car. In the background Al is being hauled away by the ambulance.

I'm seeing people saying, "I already knew squirrels ate meat. How did scientists not know?"
They did know that squirrels eat meat. The new discovery is that California ground squirrels are actively and regularly hunting voles.
Always check the source, pop-sci headlines sometimes oversimplify things.
Excerpt from the study "Vole hunting: novel predatory and carnivorous behavior by California ground squirrels" (Smith et al. 2024)

Excerpt reads: "There is some evidence of meat-eating in California ground squirrels. Despite its primarily granivorous diet, previous studies have documented occasional consumption of invertebrates (Evans and Holdenried 1943; Stanton 1944; Baker 1984; Carlton and Hodder 2003) and avian eggs or nestlings of killdeer, California quail, bobwhite quail, ring-necked pheasant, mourning dove, dark-eyed junco, and American robin (Grinnell and Storer 1924; Emlen and Glading 1938; Stanton 1944; Fitch 1948; Linsdale 1946; Leopold 1977; Baker 1984; Purcell and Verner 1999; Yeh et al. 2007Y; Bataille and Baldassarre 1993). It has also been reported to eat eggs of domestic chickens (Grinnell and Dixon 1918; Howell 1938) and a small fish, the California grunion (Olson 1950). Fitch (1948) observed it consuming, but not directly killing, young desert cottontails, adult pocket gophers, and kangaroo rats."

Almost there...

Thank you for reminding me that I also need to play Triangle Strategy
I think that archetype still exists in some capacity, but truth be told, none of the Tron decks are seeing much play these days.
Nice! The only pauper deck I have is this super janky Temur Tron build.
I've been seeing some cool control focused mono-red Tron lists lately, so I'm thinking of pivoting to that.
Finished my replay of Mafia 3. It's a shame that it gets so grindy in the middle. In the beginning and ending of the game, you can see what a more tightly paced version of Mafia 3 looks like, and that version is truly something special, even with all of its technical issues.

Thanks! I have only played the original trilogy, so I'm looking forward to it!
I've recently been getting into Standard again on Arena. Occasionally, I play EDH at my LGS.

I might try to get some of the folks at the LGS into Pauper. I've been watching the format's meta for a couple of years, but haven't really had the chance to play it much.
I love magic! What formats do you play?
Ace Attorney? Hell yeah! I literally just picked up a copy of the Apollo Justice Trilogy like yesterday
I'd highly recommend the free version of DaVinci Resolve. It has everything you'll likely need and then some. There's a bit of a learning curve, but that's going to be true of any editing software. The ceiling of what DaVinci is capable of is notably higher than any other free option I'm aware of.
This was really interesting to read through! As someone coming from mtg, I don't think I would have realized that getting a card back is kind of like getting a 2 CP discount + potential color fixing. That Bartz interaction is also very cool.
A Chris Hadfield shout-out will always get a thumbs up from me. I firmly believe his space oddity video is a strong contender for the title of "best video on the entire internet"
I'm sure the avalanche party would last long enough that Biggs could show up fashionably late once the kids were in bed. Now I'm imagining him speeding from sector 5 back to sector 7 on his motorcycle, still dressed as Bugs Bunny, which is a fantastic mental image
