Wow!
Brown rats are preying on bats at urban hibernation sites – even snatching them mid-air. Conservation efforts must include non-native rodent control at key bat roosts.

Winter Talks are back this month! What better way to celebrate Halloween than joining us for an evening to find out how bats evolved? (Please note this is a repeat of a previous talk, back by popular demand for those who missed out last time.) 🦇
We won't be planning any more bat walks this year, but you can still join us for Apple Day at @gressenhallfw.bsky.social on Sunday 12th October, and our Winter Talks programme will commence at the end of the month so look out for announcements! 🦇
Thank you to everyone who joined us on our walk at Whitlingham Country Park last night. We still found 4 species in the windy weather! 🦇

Remembering and celebrating Jane Goodall, one of the most impactful conservationists of our time who fought for the world’s most vulnerable species and proved to all of us that one person can make a difference. 💚
Quote from Jane Goodall- "I think I'd like to be remembered as someone who really helped people have a little humility and realize that we are part of the animal kingdom not separated from it."

🦇It's October! What are bats up to now?

More mating is taking place, and building up fat reserves is becoming crucial to survive the winter season. Bats will start looking for suitable hibernation sites, and beginning periods of torpor.

You read that right- there are now 1,500 official bat species known to science!
The Bioko pipistrelle (𝘗𝘪𝘱𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘶𝘴 𝘦𝘵𝘶𝘭𝘢) was found on Bioko Island in Africa’s Equatorial New Guinea by former BCI Student Scholar Dr. Laura Torrent and her colleagues.
Hazards that you don't expect in rural Norfolk, we nearly caught a bongo in our harp trap! Another great night at Watatunga Wildlife Reserve. Several Nathusius' pipistrelles caught. (Video Ebonie Lambo-Hills) 🦇

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the bat walk at Eaton Park this evening. Great to see the noctules and all three species of pipistrelle. 🦇
This little bat enjoyed a weekend of 5* accomodation, and all you can eat mealworms with one of our bat carers. He was very hungry but soon perked up, and was safely re-released close to where he was found. 🦇
It's been a busy summer for our bat carers. This Daubenton's bat was found today clinging to a shop wall in the middle of town, looking distinctly unwell. He is now receiving food, water & a bit of TLC. If you find a bat in an odd place please call the National Bat Helpline: 0345 1300 228

🦇 Looking for a bat-themed gift (or just want to treat yourself)? Check our pages: www.bats.org.uk/about-bats/w...

All the businesses listed sell a range of products - from clothing, bat detectors, books and more - but the best bit is they donate part of their sales to our work to protect bats!
