#ProjectGA60

My month of self-indulgence is over.

I started it carried away and became more so. Which fits, as they started brilliantly and became more so.

Anyway, here's 'The Whole Lot(ta History)' Edition.

Signing off... now 🤞for a Deep Cuts Show :)

France 1/1, Democratic Republic of the Congo 1/2 2022: 9/12 Single	Alpha: 24/50	Chrono: 22/50
PPP: Nomination (main) 2022, B-sides R1

The other discovery from Neil Kulkarni’s Substack was my main nomination in the 2022 People’s Pop Poll. It’s no longer my favourite of the year, but it reflected the spirit of 2022 - a mind expanded by a certain Spanish language album, newly open to all sorts of music from Africa, mainly amapiano. Neil described this as a “fab conjunction of techno, dubhousedisco and afrostep… that will DANCE everyone OUT.” In simpler terms, it’s a monstrous banger driven by vaguely familiar house beats, that breaks down and builds at least three times in five minutes, punctuated with ululations and chants and even some FGTH-style “hooowwrr”s. I pretend that's the Birmingham Piss Troll ;)

So, I just learned this is about to be A THING.
Bradley Whitford (the Emmy-winning actor formerly known as Josh Lyman) and Allison Janney (the multiple Emmy-winning actress formerly known as CJ Cregg) are about to be, respectively, First Gentleman and President of the USA in season 3 of The Diplomat. And here are Bradley Whitford (Josh) and Allison Janney (CJ) in younger days, observing a presentation from the Cartographers for Social Equality in The West Wing S2 E16 'Somebody's Going To Emergency, Somebody's Going To Jail'.

This is absolutely nuts. As well as racist, xenophobic, deeply offensive and entirely ineffective.

i forgot the word "tumbledryer" the other day so i called it a tumbley bumbley and english is my only fucking language.

abolish the home office.
Changes to the English language requirement were first reported in May when the government published their early plans in the immigration white paper. The new standard requires people to express themselves “fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expression” and to be able to communicate flexibly in social, academic and work situations.

Who could have guessed that demonising trans people would impact on their rights?

The moral panic was never about 'legitimate concerns' or protecting women or children, it was always about vilification, oppression and the mainstreaming of reactionary politics

I'm just going to say that I did this with seven books in early May, and I don't feel even slightly bad about it.

Gaga is the second artist in my list who will be picked for all three decades. No prizes for working out the first. They might even get picked together 🤯

With the 2025 option in Part IV, she could conceivably be picked for all four challenges.

'ABRACADABRA'

I like maximalist pop by people who know exactly how great they are, and if you can't handle it, you can just, you know, f-

Once I’d finished Charli’s #ArtistFave15, March was mainly about Mayhem, leading up to that genuinely incredible Coachella performance in the second week of April. People who know Gaga better said this was her best single since the Born This Way era. Popjustice later voted it second in a full rate, behind only ‘Bad Romance’. Regardless of whether you’d agree with that ranking (and I wouldn’t), as a later-period megastar pop revival, ‘Abracadabra’ is comparable to ‘Hung Up’. At one of my last visits to the Leadmill I saw the kids - possibly pre-schoolers when ‘Bad Romance’ was no.1 - absolutely revelling in it. It just seems to capture so much of what made her great: lyrics, production, vocal technique, video, performance aesthetic. Please, let’s poll it again for 2025, but properly.

watching the UKs green party elect an actual unafraid leftist into leadership and see party membership double in under a month is once again endless proof that if you stand up for leftist causes and treat the electorate like adults, you’ll win people over easily

After marinating for a while, I think the most chilling part of this documentary is footage from Nazi book burning, seamlessly cutting to recent footage from Tennessee. You realise it hasn’t just been put in colour when you hear little 🇺🇸 girl asking ‘can I burn a book next, mommy’?

I was/am unusual in that I don't like custard(1) or cream(2) either, and this was something that somehow reminded me of both, while being texturally more off-putting than either.

(1) will have a teaspoon on Christmas pudding
(2) will have a tiny bit on a scone with jam
nonoxcol.bsky.social
No, it's the texture, it just made me feel sick to look at... waste of jam tbh :)

This is Graham Linehan, who UKLabour, WesStreeting and every columnist in the country rushed to defend when he was arrested by police, after inciting online violence and smashed a trans girl’s phone. They are even changing the law specifically to protect him. “Just a joke” @mrjamesob.bsky.social
