This also goes for the mental health conversation. It's not just that Black people don't go to therapy but that there isn't enough access to mental health care and resources that are affordable or available to Black people. And if you're Black and you have a therapist you know it's hard to find one

The thing that does not get talked about enough in the "go get checked" convo is the lack of access to care. By and large Black people have less access to medical care, Black people are more likely to be medically uninsured or underinsured. There are less health care providers in Black neighborhoods

About to top w breadcrumbs and a pat of butter before broiling for a few minutes, but I legit think my Maw Maw Edna possessed me for the past couple of hours. I swear this is her recipe, because I only had my memory and tastebuds to rely on. Have I ever stuffed a mirliton? Mais, no. 🥲

Me actually flirting looks waaay different than what’s often perceived to be me flirting. Trust me, you’ll know!

Correction: Goldthree’s course was entitled, “Slavery & Emancipation in Latin America and the Caribbean.” I knew something was off, so I just pulled up my transcript lol

Angie Stone and D'Angelo leaving this Earth in the same year seems tragically poetic.

Having at least a bachelor’s degree still means that your earning potential will more than likely (but not always bc—racial capitalism) exceed that of someone without one. So, if that’s the end-all-be-all for you, then the tassel is still worth the hassle.

It’s not a scam. I think that education for education’s sake is good enough. But I also know that the current univ. model is dictated by industry trends, which means that some budding scholars won’t be employable upon graduation. Still, the networks and currency of my degree are unmatched.

19. Is college a scam? Why or why not?
noirleanian.bsky.social
I was surprised at the number of close-minded and ardently conservative people I crossed paths with at a liberal arts college. I thought I was stepping into this bastion of liberalism after leaving South Louisiana, but boy was I wrong! 🤣

18. What is something that surprised you about college?
noirleanian.bsky.social
College me was a less sure of himself, despite others’ perception of him. He was also a much more trusting of new people and experiences, and that’s somewhat on the upswing again. Current me also doesn’t care as much about linear career progression and development.

17. How is the college you different from current you?

Least favorite thing was definitely the distance. It was a 3-hr flight from New Orleans to Boston, and then a 2.5-hr coach ride from Boston to Hanover. And that was if there weren’t any hiccups w travel.

16. What was your least favorite thing about college?
noirleanian.bsky.social
A core memory is def running around that blazing bonfire at my first Dartmouth homecoming in 2008. I was so excited and so were all of my friends. Just pure, innocent, cult-like fun! 🥰

14. What is your craziest college story?
noirleanian.bsky.social
I'd listen to my first mind and get that damn math degree (mainly to avenge my more timid and respectable self). I would've still majored in AAAS, though.
