Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

When I tossed out the old container of paints used to do the cover painting for WORDS OF RADIANCE, it landed upside down in my wastebasket on a piece of paperboard I had been using as a palette for something else. 1/2

Autumn is my favourite time for mountain walking. Spring’s pesky snowdrift are melted, and summers aggressive flies and oppressive heat are but a memory.
The autumn colours and the low stark wan sunlight bestow the mountains with a majestic splendour.
