Troubador. Former film critic and author. Was once seen in NYT, The Atlantic, The Ringer. Now seen at open mic night, possibly in your town.
Two things are true:

Paul Dano wasn't great in TWBB. In fact, we all know he wasn't even supposed to play that role until the last minute, and maybe that was for a reason?

Quentin Tarantino is an asshole.

We all love Adam Sandler, but do ya ever think we're overrating his acting ability just a teensy bit? He was good in JAY KELLY, but I think a more skilled actor could have done more with that role.

The absolute best part of working from home is not the 0-minute commute or saving money on lunch or not having to do bullshit small talk...it's the fact that when the day gets too difficult, I can simply go to my bedroom and lie down for 15 minutes. There's nothing better.

I really don't care about the Oscars anymore, and I certainly don't think they are awards of actual merit, but watching my first director crush PTA cruise to victory has me feeling a little gooey inside.

Don't fuck it up, voters.

This is my point. This change is inevitable. You can't blame it on one person or one deal. It has been happening since the beginning of time. It's literally the way of the world.
Last point for now: What's killing theatrical distribution is not Netflix. It's the easy, fast, relatively inexpensive availability of all theatrical releases (not to mention tons of other viewing options) at home, and every studio that depends on theatrical business has colluded in that.

I know nobody wants to hear this today, but everything fades and dies eventually. The theatrical cinematic experience is no exception. And neither are you.

Of all the great films from 1999, the one that grows the most in my esteem every year is NOTTING HILL. A love story so reserved it approaches the cinema of transcendence. By the end, every Hugh Grant stammer and Julia Roberts lip quiver evokes the eternal. Okay, I exaggerate - but not that much.

I've been hanging out on Twitter again lately, and it has become such an absolute hellscsape. All I see are blowhard conservatives talking shit about Democrats and atheists, and baseball fans overreacting to every offseason development.

Because to these people the purpose of a list is to validate their tastes.
Year-end critics’ lists exist for people to fight over, so I’m happy when people complain about them. But the complaint I will never get is, “I’ve never heard of most of these movies/albums/shows.” Yes, and? Why be mad about learning about stuff you didn’t know before from the news?

Revisited THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD. It's a beautiful, moving film, but I wonder how it would land if Julie wasn't played by the most adorable creature who ever lived. If they went with an actor of merely above average beauty and charisma, would we be as forgiving of Julie's actions? I wonder.

Elon Musk and the Trump administration gleefully shutting down USAID “has already caused the deaths of six hundred thousand people, two-thirds of them children.”

People throw around terms like genocide quite freely online but it’s hard to find other words to describe this level of man-made death.

This is an insightful but deeply upsetting article about why everyone in the US feels poor, and why the current political situation emerges as a direct result.

1. A landmark study was just published in The Journal of Pediatrics.

It found a 68% reduction in suicidality for trans youth getting HRT.

It also found only 7 of more than 400 stopped taking HRT... and of those that did, 4 still identified as gender-diverse.

Transgender care saves lives.

What's Up Doc is not on this list. Fire it into the sun.
The movie listed at #1 is so incredibly misplaced that it calls into question the veracity of the entire list. It belongs on the list, yes, but SO MUCH further down. An absolute, credibility-wrecking flub. Boo, @variety.com! Boo!
