Creating & animating sample scenes really helps uncover which parts of the interface are frustrasting/unusable, which parts are buggy/broken, and which parts are working well.

Definitely the most complex UI I've ever attempted (and I also admit that UI is not my strong suit).

Stick it out! I know what you mean but I think there’s increasingly good content here.

Yes, it's definitely just continuing a trend that started long ago.

Originally the hope was that the internet would displace "radio as gatekeeper" or "record label as rent seeker". That doesn't seem to have happened.

I’m not in the music industry, but a lot of the musicians, producers and DJs I respect have been saying the same thing for years now.

I don’t really know how to fix it. But I can at least encourage people to actually *buy* music rather than streaming on Spotify.

I decided to dig around ARC-AGI for a bit, and I see that ARC-AGI 3 is now available in preview!

I tried to move my main friends group from WhatsApp to Signal. They lasted a week before they reverted, purely due to the UI.

I logged into Mastodon today. I love the idea, but oof that UI is rough!

I think we have to admit that unfortunately, good UI is (a) hard, (b) really really really important.

(Signal - please take note).

Promoting tourism is something that the Singaporean government does amazingly well.

To be honest, I don’t think it’s a very interesting place to visit, but they manage to convince thousands of people from all across the world otherwise.

Respect where it’s due!

Still looking for the “less US politics” button on my Bluesky feed.

Isn’t this an artifact of positional sinusoidal embeddings though? I feel like like you’d find similar “addition” relations for non-numeric tokens where the result is semantically nonsense (something like king - man + woman = tractor). I skimmed the paper quickly and couldn’t see any mention.

I only just discovered that “Party All The Time” is actually by Eddie Murphy! I’d only ever heard it in DJ sets and would never have picked it as his voice.

AGI was actually achieved by South Korea, but then they lost it in a datacenter fire with no backups.

I'd call it Ouroboros (ourobros)?

Not sure if "entreprise" is a typo on the pleias landing page or it's intentionally using French spelling (?)

Another thing Bluesky does genuinely better is search. Both Twitter and Reddit are totally useless in this respect, but every time I use Bluesky it gives me exactly what I’m looking for.

Possibly just my subconscious perceptual gap between moving exactly like a human would and moving slightly differently due to different joints/weight distribution/etc.
nickfisherau.bsky.social
There's something so strange about these videos. The way it moves strikes me as uncanny valley territory (particularly when scrambling/recovering). It almost feels like it's CGI/AI, but enough people seem to have vouched for it so I guess that's not it.

I would use a humanoid robot for one thing and one thing only -a freestanding Judo/wrestling dummy. Doesn't even need to offer much in the way feedback, it just needs to be able to keep its balance for the initial entry into a throw.

I wouldn't be willing to pay $21k for one, but who knows?

Some of my other incorrect (or at least, overly optimistic) predictions from that era:

1) we'd all be driving in self-driving cars by now
2) radiologists would be obsolete

I blame Hinton for the last one.

I naively believed (pre-2020) that text would become so easy to generate that video would become the authoritative medium.

How wrong I was!

Sora is not the real problem here. The real problem is that in 12, at most 24 months, there will be a Sora clone from Tencent or Alibaba that is just as good and can be run by anybody with a 5099, at which point everyone in society needs to rapidly agree to treat all digital video as fake, period.

There's so much legacy/inertia behind those architectures that it's difficult to see them going away completely (not to mention the existence of React and TypeScript, which are probably single-handedly going to keep the JS ecosystem alive for decades.

However, it's a vision I can get behind!

His predictions are very optimistic (to put it in modern terms, by 2035 that WASM will have almost entirely displaced native binaries/libraries/APIs, everything is run in sandboxed, CPU-agnostic virtual machines and Javascript is basically dead).
