Hi hello #portfolioDay! Im Sarah, a snr concept artist in games, indi Dev, freelance #cartographer & #TTRPG designer from Scotland. I love being an artist and over the last 15 years I’ve worked on projects like #DeathsDoor, #SpyroReignited, Possessor(s), Campaign Builder: Cities & Towns & more!
A shipwreck on a mountain top, with a Japanese-style noodle bar inside. Secret area of deaths door. a ruined templed inside a cave covered in snow. Exterior and interior concepts for an old rundown bar with stained glass. Inside is a smokie dive with lots of plants and hanging cages for different creatures. Flooded street with a character skating over the water, ruined buildings and tech to either side of the street. Large trees grow through old buildings.

I saw the final 30 minutes of Laputa on UK tv in the 80s and had no clue what it was. They never showed it again and it was 10 years until I managed to get a fansub copy of that magical movie about a castle in the sky. The fansubber filled up the tape with 3 eps of Escaflowne too - good times!

Something I love that was especially precious pre-widespread internet adoption is moments where you got into some kind of important books/ movies/ music/ art in general that was otherwise unavailable from you. Like a friend who made you That One Mixtape, your random video rental one time, etc

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

Bloodborne and Silent Hill: two of the greatest games of all time and also two of the foggiest - Coincidence?!?!

Go whole hog, like fog in a bog that's surrounded by smog.

Gamedev tip: If in doubt, fill it full of fog.

the saga continues;
- small room tests, borrowing prop textures for walls and floors, etc
- exploring another watercolor painting, now a kit
- back to the first room, exploring greater realism
- restart, greater UX focus but still seeking the spontaneous

Here's Archery, Badminton, and 100meters.

I made this in 4 weeks. Handled everything from code to character design, from background art to animations to gameplay. It was a promotional sports game for a big advertising agency.

Some Avelynmyre (aka "Aves") OC ref sheets and early devlopment sketches. She's gone through lots of iterations!

Digging through some reference folders I found this photo of my son from years ago on Cleeve Hill.

Wait 20 minutes to get into an online-only game that most people play without interacting (or wanting to interact) with a single other player... Modern gaming is stupid.

Also, this ghoul is 81?!? How many blood boys does he have? 😂

We've only ever been useful as customers or workers to these 'visionaries'. Now that technology is reaching a point where neither is a requirement for their continued wealth and power, they can quietly drop the promises of a tech utopia and instead concentrate on surveillance and containment. Yay.

Something new for family board game night!
Creepy 1930s boardgame called Physogs where you have to place the correct facial features in each head. Me last night trying to explain why I'm watching The Great Waldo Pepper to my kids: 'It's about barnstormers in the 1920s! Robert Redford flew the planes and did his own stunts - including wing-walking!'
