You can't beat Eric Coates, at any time. 😊
This week's episode of #NewsoftheWar was brought to you with a smidge of Roy Plumley's Desert Island Discs. And if you're wondering what #NOTW is all about - have a listen. Headlines behind the frontlines, WW2!
We're saying nothing about Wintle's choice of luxury. 😡
@andyaitch.bsky.social @merrynwalters.uk
Colonel A D Wintle
Fav track: The Magic Flute by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0…
What did Field Marshal Montgomery plump for, on Plumley's Desert Island Discs?
Fav track: Sei Nicht Bos (from Der Obersteiger) by Carl Zeller

.... we found Desert Island Discs being broadcast on Forces Radio, on January 8th, 1942. Earlier than the official reports! The truth is, DID was first commissioned to run via BBC Forces for 8 weeks.
So we got to thinking -- who, in WW2, has appeared on Plumley's show?💫
💫What’s this, a scoop, for #NewsoftheWar?

Yes! (Almost.) It’s commonly said, Desert Island Discs was conceived in Nov 1941 and first recorded on Jan 27th, 1942. GUESS WHAT. But in this week's #NOTW we discovered something.

What’s the lowest point in the war for the British?……Dunkirk? Crete? Singapore? Tobruk?

I’d contest its this point, January 1942.

A blow to morale, how did we recover from it?

It’s a dog’s life in #NOTW, and there’s no finer example of man’s best friend than a Dalmation – especially this one. Fleet, owned by George Marshall, and ‘Bill’, sworn (and scrotched) by everyone at a certain RAF station.
It’s all happening in Malaya this week – spoiler alert, this is not how to curry favour with the RAF – but it’s also to and fro (again) in North Africa. New broom at the War Office?! Ooh sir, Suits YOU Sir!
In entertainment news this week, we can’t get enough of this week’s Hollywood releases – they’ve got to be seen to be believed!
Good old Photo of the Week. You can’t beat a bit of Photo of the Week in an audio broadcast – it really focuses the attention. Churchill here (on the left) and Dumbo here (on the right) and in our Cartoon of the Week.
And we’re back! Yes, it the NOTW – as it happened in the first week of 1942. In this episode @andyaitch.bsky.social and @merrynwalters.uk look at what was in the headlines (and the personal ads) on January 8th. Brace yourselves ...

That said, what DO you know about Australia's role as an ally? And Lendlease? And cannibalism? And unexpected broadcasts by big men in high-waisted trousers? Yes, you heard it hear first - it's all in the #NewsoftheWar
Tracking down the news of the war - news from home, news about the Aussie's travels overseas - was easier than we thought. Lots of headlines. But not always the full story ... linktr.ee/NewsOfTheWar
G'day, mate! Yes, it's our Australian special. In true #NewsoftheWar style, we invited Chris Olivant to be our guest-editor and share his curious fascination with the Aussies' in WW2. No roos, but plenty of rumination on Blamey, Kokoda & politics🇦🇺🐨 @merrynwalters.uk @andyaitch.bsky.social
Thank you Ian! That’s so kind
We we thinking it could have come through being captured in the western desert or through contacts in Portugal

Another top pod from @merrynwalters.uk and @andyaitch.bsky.social. Marvel as Merryn slips seamlessly from Antipodean to RP. Once again a pleasure to catch up with Merryn and Andy at WHWFF.
Bonjour. The words 'love triangle' and 'prisoner of war' don't often appear in the same sentence. But they do in this week's episode of the #Newsofthewar ! It's the tale of the two Johns (honestly, we don't make these up).
@andyaitch.bsky.social @merrynwalters.uk
🚨Last but not least - it's a #NewsoftheWar scoop!
Did you know when Kit Kat was invented? Neither did we. Check it out, in this week's episode - all the headlines behind the frontlines on 3rd November 1941.. .
Photo of the Week? We head to the Russian front. There's a name for this mud. Do you know what it is? Find out in the #Newsofthewar.
And our dictator of the week this week is ... a man who's holding back Nazi tyranny. Single-handed, by all accounts. It's all kicking off I tell you...
The Duke of Bedford - what a rogue, what a traitor! He's complaining. Loudly. But there’s not much anyone can do about it, above the noise of his 400 parrots...
