Gosh I love looking at the newspapers…. You just stumble across nuggets of gold every single time.

What’s the lowest point in the war for the British?……Dunkirk? Crete? Singapore? Tobruk?

I’d contest its this point, January 1942.

A blow to morale, how did we recover from it?

Molenstraat nowadays (not the exact same camera location, fyi)
On the 11th of November 1944 The Sphere magazine printed it first photos from the Walcheren campaign, its front page is of the men of the 4th (Borders) Battalion The Kings Own Scottish Borderers (Peter Whites Bat) moving down Molenstraat on November 1st, a few hours after landing.

G'day, mate! Yes, it's our Australian special. In true #NewsoftheWar style, we invited Chris Olivant to be our guest-editor and share his curious fascination with the Aussies' in WW2. No roos, but plenty of rumination on Blamey, Kokoda & politics🇦🇺🐨 @merrynwalters.uk @andyaitch.bsky.social
Huge thank you to all that tagged along on Walking With The Jocks this weekend.

Sharing the story of Peter White and his jocks is a genuine honour.

Special thanks to wingman @merrynwalters.uk and BH tours.

Battles for the Aller and the woods of Gros Eilstorf.
Is it even a Germany tour without currywurst mit pommes? @merrynwalters.uk
Look, I’m working on my Winston voice, ok?

I’m a teetotaller and I don’t smoke, so I’m at some disadvantage.

Anyhoo, latest ep of @newsofthewar.bsky.social is out, it’s the last date in 1941… check it out here

Convalescent hospital?
Easier to read version
one came home, likely died of wounds
Oh great, thanks!
Where and how did you find this out? I’m pretty good a commonwealth but not tried German
A lot of the local men were Gebirgsjager, I notice a lot of the killed in the Caucasus
Came a cross this a few times in Germany, although it’s not common to have it still out on public display, I believe.

This was Berchtesgaden (which maybe explains it on show)

I wonder why this didn’t catch on in the UK?
Regardless of who is commemorated I found it quite affecting.
One of my most favourite stories on @newsofthewar pod yet.

Weird POW ménage à trois shenanigans… I wonder if Joan ever married John (either one)?
New ep here linktr.ee/NewsOfTheWar
Just some random house on a mountain.
Quick pee stop in the woods, not sure what these old bits of concrete are, hope the owner doesn’t mind.
