A friend of mine came into possession of the blu-ray boxset of the Stray Cat Rock movies starring Meiko Kaji, and he passed them on to me. Score!

#nowwatching The Uncanny (1977). A portmanteau film composed of three cat-related horror stories, tied together by Peter Cushing as a paranoid author convinced cats are trying to take over the world. I'm on the side of the furry foes. #horrorsky

It seems cosmically unfair that we got a Stephen King-directed version of The Shining, but never had the opportunity to experience Stanley Kubrick's Maximum Overdrive.

#nowwatching The Evil of Frankenstein (1964). The third in the Hammer Frankenstein series. The Baron rediscovers his monster frozen in ice, and finds ways for it to do his bidding... #horrorsky

My friend was wearing a 'Mogwai' T-shirt earlier, and it made me wonder whether putting it in the washing machine causes it to reproduce lots of smaller mogwai T-shirts.

#nowwatching Frankenstein Must be Destroyed (1969). In this installment of the Hammer series, the good Baron is trying his hand at brain-swapping. Peter Cushing is wonderful as always. Personally, I think these films are even better than the Dracula series. #horrorsky

#nowwatching The Mezzotint (2021), a short film based on the M.R. James story, and part of the Ghost Story for Christmas series. A museum curator takes receipt of a mezzotint of a house, which seems to be disturbingly...animated. #horrorsky

#nowwatching Maximum Overdrive (1986), an intellectual treatise about the dangers technology might pose to humanity if it were to go crazy due to a magic asteroid and start killing people. #horrorsky

Awful news about Rob Reiner. He made so many great films, but The Princess Bride is the one that meant the most to me. We used to watch it all the time when I was a kid. RIP.

We’re crushed to hear of the tragic death of Rob Reiner and his wife Michele. In his wide-ranging filmmaking career, Mr. Reiner made an indelible mark on the horror genre with his 1990 film MISERY. We mourn his passing and send our condolences to his loved ones.

Today's gig finished at 19:30 (I love Japan), so I retired to a bar and watched Valley of the Zombies (1946) over a couple of beers. A Republic film featuring precisely one zombie, and no valley at all. Nicely filmed compared to the monogram pictures, but very slight and bloodless. #horrorsky

More live music! More somewhat over-the-hill punk! Starting in a few minutes!

Well, that was unsettling. It managed to create a genuinely nightmarish and uncanny atmosphere, but whether that was intentional or just a result of naivety and incompetence is anyone's guess! It almost felt if the film was an avatar for something much more disturbing (I can't explain what I mean).
#nowwatching Malatesta's Carnival of Blood (1973). I had no idea that the famed Italian anarchist theorist Errico Malatesta had made a horror film. I...oh, different Malatesta? Ok, well I'll keep watching it still, I guess. #horrorsky

A horror-comedy that fails badly on both counts. Mantan Moreland raises an occasional smile, and John Carradine does his best with the material. Other than that very little happens as it stumbles boringly towards a rushed conclusion (which, to be fair, contains exactly one effective horror moment).
#nowwatching Revenge of the Zombies (1943), a sequel/remake of King of the Zombies, in which a mad scientist is found to be making undead soldiers for the Third Reich. An unimpressive poverty row production from Monogram, but at least it's another checked off the zombie film list! #horrorsky

#nowwatching The Brain Eaters (1958). 50s teen sci-fi horror trash, which I'm only watching because I'm pretty sure it inspired an excellent song by the Misfits. The poster is great though. #horrorsky

I ended up finishing this today. Basically, the main character's horror stories start to bleed into his life, corrupting his children and relationships. The message seems to be that horror is bad and you shouldn't make or consume it. It's kind of like a crappier version of Fulci's Cat in the Brain.
#nowwatching Deadline (1980). A horror writer goes mad while working on his next novel. This film is properly obscure - I couldn't find any information about it, which is definitely a good sign. #horrorsky

As you get older it's important to keep having experiences and learning new things. For example, today I'm experiencing a weird pain in my hip and learning to favour the other side when I walk.

This was great! Nothing Cronenbergian about it, but a fun action drama with a nice bad guy performance from John Saxon.
#nowwatching Fast Company (1979), a David Cronenberg-helmed action film in which a racing car driver has to reclaim his reputation from a rival. #filmsky

Picked up some new books! A mix of classical sociology, heterodox economics, Marxism, Anarchism, and English Civil War-era proto-socialism. This is all for my day job.

Some nice scenery, a couple of decent shots, and some fairly creative set design. Put that up against an incoherent story, a monster that looks like a cheap Halloween costume, and a family that seem like they're being forced to interact at gunpoint. I have to give it 2 cursed villas out of 5.
#nowwatching The Ogre (1989), another film by Lamberto Bava made for the Brivido Giallo TV series. A family goes on holiday to an Italian castle, which contains remnants of the mother's childhood nightmares. No relation to the Demons franchise. #horrorsky
