I think the Trump admin assumed no one would try to find out who the people on the boats they blew up really were

I just tried doing this (with “Yakety Sax”), but can’t figure out how to upload it so the sound works.

Wrong question. The right question is "How many do they have to arrest to cow the others?"

A longer video of the collision between PLA Navy destroyer Guilin and a Chinese coast guard ship as they pursued a Philippines coast guard patrol vessel about 10 miles east of Scarborough Shoal

I remember Tim Powers describing his process at an EasterCon a while ago which sounded like an even more advanced version of this, but it involved written vignettes or essays colour-doded and connected by string but spread out on the floor so he could move them around as he added more material.

The single best line from any rpg ever is from a random encounter table in Anomalous Subsurface Environment by Patrick Wetmore. Still kills me every time

"Mimes. Dozens of them, trapped in their invisible boxes, silently pleading for help"

From a Discord I shared the OP with:
Monochrome version of Mr Rogers looking through a window, touching the frame, and with a manic expression. The word balloon from the Sicko meme has been added, reading "Yes… Ha ha ha… YES!"

From the replies (bsky.app/profile/dasb...) here's Sam Altman doing what the quoted post described. He seems serious about it.

With Tom Lehrer's passing, I suppose this is a moment to share the story of the prank he played on the National Security Agency, and how it went undiscovered for nearly 60 years.

And if they did notice the jeans or whatever, they carried on suspending their disbelief without an attack of the vapours.

In 1978, you saw the film in the cinema or you didn't see it at all. Having spent the princely sum of £1.50 or whatever, most people weren't going to be looking anywhere but at the focal point of the scene. It's not as though they could replay the scene or pause it for close examination.

You're okay with calling John by his name, but you want it to be _her_ name? Now you're just being the a_hole yourself, mate.

Bear in mind that a mandatory part of the process is living an extended period as that gender. Hard to do that if the law is that you have to be "Jane" while you're dressing as "John".

It really is simpler all around if you change your name and pronouns at the beginning of the transition process.
nelc.bsky.social
The question is, if it takes years to transition — which it does, all "us people" know it — when do you switch to calling yourself by the pronouns and chosen name suitable? Is it only at the end of the process? /…

What is this thing you're describing, and what does it have to do with real life?

It takes _years_ to transition, any reading at all will tell you that. Every trans person knows that. _No-one_ thinks that it can be done by clicking your fingers, outside of a dream or a sci-fi novel or a D&D game.

They sound no different to a serial killer explaining what they were doing with their victims to the court psychiatrist.

The right word for this is not "laboratory", it's "dungeon".

"Laboratory for torture" sounds so clinical, almost as though there was some higher purpose and they were disinterestedly experimenting. I seem to remember something similar being said about Abu Ghraib.

It's clear that the thing they're experimenting with is how far they can go being a psychopath.
