"Pleistocene and early Holocene megafaunal extinctions can stimulate us to reevaluate what is natural in the world and what sort of natures we seek to conserve or restore. If we accept the increasing evidence for a strong human role in these early extinctions, it forces a look inwards and 1/2

This fen creation trial by the High Batts team at Pennycroft Quarry is hopefully the start of something much bigger. It's survived a mammoth river flood and prolonged inundation. Adjoining open water is crystal clear and dominated by stonewort beds, suggesting ideal conditions for calcareous fen.

Quite the opposite.

Mega-herbivores breathe life back into the forests, because when it comes to species count and functional dynamics our current forests are barely operating.

What you might see as destruction would provide wildlife, trees and flora with the conditions they're most adapted to.

More after dark magic in the rainforest with a UV torch.

Some species of fungi are bioflorescent in ultraviolet light, making them glow against the blackness of night.

A walk through the woods becomes a truly enchanting experience.

In the second photo, you can see the red deer was moving quite fast. 👇

Vrij verse prenten van een #wolf die op een #edelhert jaagt.

Op de tweede foto zie je dat het edelhert er flink de vaart in had. 👇

Veel verplaatsing van het zand, gespreide tenen en de bijhoeven drukken af.

Order#638273

6 Hippos
6 Crocodiles

Your order is packed and on it's way!

You will be billed for expedited international overseas shipping of a dozen very large, dangerous animals.

Let's hope theres no trouble in customs. 🤞

Modern hippos are not physiologically different from their ice-age ancestors. They are also not very cold tolerant, minimum air temp 50F / 10C. They survived by inhabiting warm-ish microclimates. I wonder if they were at all migratory? or maybe found geothermal refuges?
nearlywild.bsky.social
Pretty sure hippos would do wonders for the ecological function of lakes, ponds, rivers, etc. Like water buffalo they would clear out excessive vegetation, fertilize the fish, and increase waterway heterogeneity by trampling and wallowing on the edges. I'll send you a few, I have 6 in stock.
nearlywild.bsky.social
Bring back the hippos?

(wild swimming would be even more exciting!)

Taken the lawnmower way out to the Pilot Path, Dungeness today for its annual mow

This is to help the Autumn Ladies Tresses as there are no sheep or goats to do the munching

Moved a Large Conehead out the way - which is my first of the year

Signs of recovery

These babies are from one of our hardest worked fields.
A field that may not have been intensified as fully as most but still was pumped up with fertilisers.

Four years ago we had one species of waxcaps, (Snowy One of the toughest) return

Then parrot and meadow
And now…
More!
A pot with two tiny waxcap fungi in it and a yellow club fungi.

Ah - I've figured it out! I was using an auto translate feature in my browser - which disables the link. If I complete the checkout without a translation, the download works. Thank You.

I thought this was a fascinating find also. Food forests enabling high natural biodiversity is another win. I'm betting this holds true in temperate food forests as well.

Spring onion flower head loaded with seeds.

We increasingly leave a number of plants to go to seed in the beds. Once ready we either harvest to sow next season or sprinkle the seed directly where we want it to grow.

The result is often a delightfully chaotic mix of plants.

Hmm, this is no longer available as a free download? (The link will not work) I missed it by a day? : (

I would like to read this if it is made available again, supposing I were to obtain a copy, would I be able to translate to English?

Thanks.

When people are seeking a practical and holistic perspective on invasive species, this is the book I set on the table.

Wow it’s been 10 years since Beyond the War on Invasive Species was published and I got to hold a physical copy in my hands!
Since then I’ve enjoyed so many interesting conversations about ecology, land stewardship, and the meaning of restoration - here’s to many more years of these!

Food production for people (food forests) can overlap with natural biodiversity.

"In Ecuador, the figure is striking: 99% of all Afro-descendant land is in biodiversity hotspots, while in Colombia almost 92% of Afro-descendant lands are in the top 5% of areas for biodiversity."

The steadily growing population of rare lesser horseshoe bats in the shed (roughly 100) attests to the level of flying insect life in the forest outside, since each bat catches around 3,000 per night.

Healthy nature depends on healthy, wild, functioning *ecosystems*.

Rewilding delivers that. 🌏
