Hi, I'm the ProPublica reporter who's been tracking an unusual stat: U.S. citizens grabbed by immigration agents.

I did it because the government isn’t.

This is what I found.

Journalist must be safely allowed into Gaza as this transition is occurring.

A free press is the only guarantee that every day people will be protected.

A free press is central to knowing the rules are being followed.

A free press is essential to peace.
Today is an important day - the remaining Israeli hostages were released, Israel freed Palestinian prisoners, and the bloodshed in Gaza has stopped.

It’s now time to rebuild. As I said before, it can’t go back to an open air prison, it must be a place where Palestinians can thrive.

BREAKING: The post-10/7 wars have killed or injured at least 236,505 people in Gaza alone. The U.S. has spent over $31 billion and counting in the wider region since Oct. 7, 2023, where millions have been displaced, according to new Costs of War research. [THREAD]

I’m so incredibly proud of my colleagues at other indie and nonprofit media orgs across the city, when I say this city is extraordinary these are the folks I’m talking about
Still thinking about the way Chicago indie media came together yesterday to demand Steve’s release.

That level of solidarity in such a crucial moment gives me hope.

What’s happening in Chicago is reaching people. Amanda Seales shared it on IG.

Tired, but encouraged to keep pushing.
Anyway, alternative media fascinates me so please hit me up if you have found gems like this or know where I can find more alternative/independent, historical publications and archives.
At the bottom of the same page of this issue of Kaleidoscope:
The Tribune headline, according to this piece, was "You Can Feed A Family On A Welfare Budget," and this piece's critique includes the fact that the four people interviewed for the article were *not* on welfare and "boasted" that they could live on a welfare budget, which was $5.37 weekly per adult.
This is from an alternative magazine called Kaleidoscope Chicago that lasted for less than one year: www.loc.gov/item/sn91055.... Found in JSTOR's 'Independent Voices' collection.
Media criticism, 1969:

"The Chicago Tribune told its readers how to eat well on a welfare budget in a March 7 article that could have been ghost-written by Marie Antoinette. Marie told the bread-starved peasants of France to eat cake. The Tribune told Chicago's welfare poor to try cake mix."

Have been trying to formulate some of this for a while and I'm glad I got to write it down, including an interview with Dr. Erin Steuter, for @prismreports.org.
Elite American media never had a “war on terror” reckoning. Palestinians are paying the price, writes @nausheen.bsky.social in an op-ed. Western journalists’ coverage of the genocide confirms that agenda-setting newsrooms learned nothing from their harmful post-9/11 reporting.

Today at #datajconf: we talked about what we've learned about pedagogy in the process of running datajournalismteachers.club. Focused on grounding data journalism in tools *and* humanities, teaching with a learner-centered rather than a "banking" model, and how we learn in community. Join the club!

I'm speaking today at @datajconf.com to data journalists, and trying to convince them it's a good idea to collaborate with civic sector and advocacy organizations on data-driven news stories! Very excited, a little nervous!

I’ve heard from a lot of parents who are NOT introducing their kids to generative AI but fewer who are.

If you are using generative AI with your young children and are open to chatting about it, please get in touch!
Hello parents! I'm interested in talking to people with kids <8 about how they're thinking about introducing (or not) their kids to Generative AI.

Do you let your kid talk to ChatGPT? Are you trying to keep childhood AI-free?

I'd love to chat! DMs open/Signal in bio/[email protected]
I'm so excited to use this tool for my own research and writing. You should read more about it here: www.cjr.org/tow_center/u...
Unheard
Using large language models to conduct source audits of the news.
www.cjr.org
She's partnering with @dmil.bsky.social to build Unheard, which is a source auditing tool for news stories. How many government officials are quoted in a story? How many civilians? How many others? This is desperately needed for elite newsrooms and those of us who study the WoT know that very well.
By far, the most needed AI tool I learned about at #datajconf was introduced by Bette Dam asking: "Can we use an AI tool to investigate ourselves [journalists] rather than someone else?" Bette has reported on Afghanistan for decades and knows intimately how deeply flawed elite news coverage is.
Also learned about Johann Jakob Meyer, one of the first editors of revolutionary Greece, who said, "Publication is the soul of justice."
