Meowdy. I am Nadia Oxford, a 44-year-old writer/podcaster who's been slumming around games writing since 2004. I'm 100% independent and trying my best.

I preserve some of my old game-related writing on my Patreon, like this 2012 cover story for 1UP about Solaris!

Look I've been holding off from months asking this on Bluesky because of my pride but I need help.

My car needs brakes, my rent is past due and my step kid needs shoes.

I hate having to ask this

No, Matsuno. Mitsuda only ever responded to one tweet I made to him, when I said “Holy shit Mitsuda has a cat” and he said “Yeah!”

Well at least it's not as bad as the time I accidentally mixed up Mastuno with Mitsuda while praising Xenoblade Chronicles 3 on Twitter, and Matsuno said if I tweeted him again he'd block me. 💀

HellO! Since we live in a world where paying residuals to writers is akin to giving Marx's corpse a blow job, I'm low 'til my next cheque comes in. If you have anything to throw into my ko-fi, it'll keep us functioning 'til then.

1 donation = 1 blow job for Marx's corpse.

A long time ago on Blood God I coined the term "Nakamura Dog Park." I think FF character designer Tetsuya Nakamura sometimes needs to be allowed to design some Nakamura-level shit, much like a dog needs to run around in circles and bark to find a reason to keep living.

This is a Nakamura dog park.

We have 5 choices, selected by different members of the crew:

Shaun of the Dead (Kat): The zombie comedy that kicked off a long and fruitful series of films from this team of creatives, with Edgar Wright in the director's chair. Horror doesn't have to just be scary, right? It can also be funny, and Shaun of the Dead certainly has a zombie horde's worth of laughs.

Jennifer's Body (Eric): Horror can contain multitudes, from prestige to shock and shlock; but sometimes that "shlock" gets reappraised and finds new meaning as time goes on. Jennifer's Body is one of the better examples of this, as Megan Fox's man-eater has become an icon in this freshly lauded cult-classic.

The Gate (Nadia): We all love a fun, cheesy romp. And The Gate is just that, straight out of Canada and bringing all the kind of popcorn thrills you'd ever want. It makes me want to sit down in a movie theater, flanked by my robot friends, and lob jokes at the monitor, which I cannot control.

The Ring (Alexi): The terror that quickly became a horror classic, and one you'll need to send to a friend right after viewing. When asked why she chose this one, Alexi said: "This movie changed my life, so to speak. When we came out of the theatre my older brother turned to me and said 'see what happens to morbid girls, Lexi?' and from then on I became like 50% less goth." Good answer!

St. John's Wort/Otogirisou (Victor): For our last film, we turn to St. John's Wort, a Japanese horror film based on a Chunsoft sound novel for the Super Famicom, Otogirisou. Somehow, Victor was the only one to pick a horror movie with an actual video game tie. But for those who want to see just how pixelated horror has influenced the silver screen, it's an interesting choice! Also ties into our recent episode all about the history of sound novels!
