Once upon a time there was a country envied for it's 860,000+ pristine lakes, more than any country in the world.
It held a place of honour as the world's reservoir, and a place of refuge for aquatic animals, fish, birds and wildlife.

Then along came men who ignored the warnings of those before; they allowed themselves to succumb to a powerful evil force, and blinded by greed they dug deep into the heart of the land and extracted what they thought was a form of gold.

Egos inflated with thoughts of glorious wealth and power, they held aloft their treasure proudly announcing"We have saved the human race!", and an astonished and awed crowd gathered and cheered.

Learned individuals uncovered the truth and warned people of the dastardly untruths, but it was too late, too much time had passed and the people were lost in their addiction to an easier lifestyle.

The lakes became polluted, plants and animals died, then slowly the air became hotter and lakes disappeared. Intense scorching infernos raced across the country.
People were puzzled, then grew angry, later mourned, until the final voice.......

A children's story that should have been told in 1800

Again, from a distance all the in-jokes and sneery comments in US popular culture about Canada being a bit of a joke country are *very* familiar.
Like Ireland, just because a society doesn't react to them, doesn't mean they aren't registered & noted as insults to national identity and pride.

Just because a neighbouring country appears to be superficially similar to the bigger power does not mean that you can project the same set of assumptions and values upon it.
Superficial similarity blinds you to deep and profound differences that the bigger country is utterly oblivious of.

While the US is utterly oblivious and completely ignorant of even the basics of Canadian equivalents - a country they share a history and border with.
