Lonely Bench ©2025 Jeffrey Gershom - A black and white photograph of a single bench overlooking the Willa Cather Memorial Prairie from September 2011. The solitude can be overwhelming, but its beauty is profound. I felt sorry for this lonely bench among the 612 acres of native prairie, so I sat down on it. My mind tried to think of what it was like during the beginning of the 20th century. I'm sure it was simple in some ways, but hard in the sense that you had to do everything yourself. You actually lived off the land. If there are any ghosts around, I'm sure they are peaceful at this place. Let's hope our current world can learn from this open and wide land.

A black and white photograph of two dried leaves. The black background gives contrast to the main subject. The leaves themselves were a faded yellow color, darkened by being naturally dried. It's sad that the life span of leaves are seasonal...so short.

During my time at Hastings College in Nebraska, I was in a quandary. Being a #Physics major, I needed my artistic outlets to balance my sanity. They were #photography and #poetry, and they really helped me out. Here's a #poem I wrote in 1983 while taking a break for my #astronomy studies.

My major was physics in hopes to become an astronomer. Sometimes mental stress can affect a person, especially a college student. Luckily, I had some creative outlets: photography and poetry. This poem is the result of one of my meltdowns.

My Buddy Rusty
One more #vintage photo for #ThrowBackThursday #TBT. This is Rusty, our #IrishSetter dog and me from the summer of 1975. He was a good dog♥️ but had too much energy.😂 We played together, and I tried to teach him some tricks, It was my older sister though, who taught him to shake hands.

It was a bit cool that morning, but the sun was out and bright. I'm glad to say that the Easter Bunny really spoiled my nieces that day.

Though I described the genesis of this poem in the image above, to put it in today's reference, the Strategic Air Command HQ (SAC) is now presently known as, Strategic Command (StratCom)...Air Force and Navy control of all air, land and sea nuclear forces.

The 1990's were a big transition for me in many ways, but my creativity flourished. I can truthfully say that 90's music helped me out. The videos were inspirational as well. Mind you the 1980's were awesome, too. Yet, all music was my saving grace. Here's one of my favorites:

For #VeteransDay. This is a photograph of me during Reforger 1991. It was the first large scale NATO exercise after Desert Storm. It was taken by a friend in my squad, 📷SPC Martinez. Our unit was positioned outside of Nottuln, Germany...just west of Münster.

This is a color photograph of me taken by my friend, SPC Martinez, during NATO exercise Reforger 1991. Our location was in Nottuln, Germany...west of Münster. It was late summer, actually the first two weeks in September. It was hard work, especially only 7 months after Desert Storm. Seeing the local countryside was nice. It reminded me, somewhat of home, in Nebraska. We met some of the local population, and they were very kind. I truly miss Germany. I'm sharing this because it's Veterans Day in 2025. My family has served in the military in different ways over many years, in all branches of the service. That's why I reenlisted for active duty for wartime during Desert Shield.

Afternoon Glow ©2025 Jeffrey Gershom - A color photograph taken in the summer of 1985. The original is a Kodachrome 64 slide that was scanned with my Epson V600 Photo. The subject, I believe, is a Rubber Plant. They were located in a botanical area at Stolley Park in Grand Island, NE. Sadly, that area is no more. What caught my eye was the light falling on them through the trees above. The colors screamed out to me. I only hoped that my film was fast enough to capture this vision with justice. I think I did an adequate job.

The real subject is the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge at the Canal Park. The foreground has a number of restaurants and stores. Sadly, I've read that the "Sand Bar" is not there anymore.

Nebraska Sunset ©2025 Jeffrey Gershom - A color photograph of a Nebraska sunset in September, 2011. I was at the Willa Cather's childhood home in Red Cloud earlier in the day. I followed that up with going just south to the Willa Cather Memorial Prairie off of HWY 281, a couple of miles from the Kansas state line. As the evening started, I knew that the light would be fading, so I packed up to go back home to Grand Island. I didn't get very far, not even back to Red Cloud. After pulling off onto a country road, I grabbed my camera and took a few shots of this beautiful sunset. There was only enough time for a few images, while making some exposure adjustments. It wasn't until some hours later that I knew I captured something special. I glad to share it with you...everyone! Thank you for viewing.

Out My Window ©2025 Jeffrey Gershom - A color photograph from looking out my window at a busy street. Many cars go by throughout the day. A good number of them speed, sometimes 'drag race' at night. I placed my Canon 5D Mark II on a tripod in the foreground for perspective...it's silhouetted due to the lack of interior lighting. Also, the fact that I was using a Holga lens on my Canon T1i body. It's funny, I still don't understand why the car in the image seems to have only half a wheel. 😳

Hmmmm...I just did an experiment and found out that my metadata for my photographs, which includes ©copyright info, is not there. After googling this, I read that #BlueSky strips all #EXIF data from images. After all my time used to protect my work, it seems it's for naught. I might leave BlueSky. 😠
