i find this image so fascinating. it is both a literal example of authoritarianism but also a second-hand reproduction of the aesthetics of other authoritarian states. it's like a simulacra of authoritarianism whose purpose is to attempt to make the simulacra real.

Can't cite a reference, but saw a study awhile back that between 10M and 100M Native Americans were killed by whites, between the times of the the colonists and sending natives to reservations. The spread is due to few records.

BTW, disease deaths weren't just incidental - many were purposeful.

The Trail of Tears doesn't even scratch the surface. Native Americans were hunted and exterminated like vermin. No records kept, because they were barely considered human. (Would you report shooting a coyote in your chicken coop?) 'Indian hunters' made a good living wiping out entire groups.
