Chapter One - The End of Darkness

Tilaani stepped through the Wolf’s Fangs, squinting into the bright light of early spring. The snow that clung to the mountain glittered in the bright afternoon sun.

“Shit.” She snatched her cloak from an icy stalagmite and darted into a slim crack in the cliff face. The frozen stone was still jagged from when the cliff had split and the edges tugged at her shirt as she sidled through, cloak still clutched in one hand.

Time warped within the cavern, stretching and compressing at random. Sometimes she would emerge to find that only a few minutes had passed outside. Today, the few hours she had spent being lectured by the spirits of the Ancients had become nearly an entire night and day in the land of the living. The dead delighted in wasting her time, especially when she had actual duties to perform.

Allak would be insufferable if she was late.

Book vibes are all about the feel of the writing, setting, and story.

The Blue Blood Series by Melissa de la Cruz Is used to represent the wealthy elite vampires living in New York, the fish out of water trope, dark secrets, and others.

The Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice is used to represent young vampires rebelling against old rules and customs. Travel and setting also play a role. A plot point was inspired by the novel.

Yakuza, Japan’s Criminal Underworld by David Kaplan and Alec Dubro, is used to represent some of the vampire rivals business practices. It plays a role in the series arch.
