🎈🤡 It (2017)

In this episode, we float down to Derry to review this adaptation of one of Stephen King’s most popular novels! We discuss Pennywise, the Losers’ Club, and what scared us as kids. 😅

Thanks for the review. I’ve been burned out by basic biopics recently so it’s good to hear that they put some effort into this one.
My #LastFourWatched were mostly rewatches of films I remembered seeing once, but never scored. The highlight was Arachnophobia! I also watched Sting (2024), another spider themed horror film. Decent double header! #HappyLetterboxdFriday
I like hearing people say that Black Phone 2 isn’t very scary, because that means I will probably feel brave enough to watch it in the future at home. 😅
On a scale of 1-5, how scary is Black Phone and Black Phone 2? This latest one was certainly gross, we'll say that much!

#GretelAndHansel (2020)

Director: Oz Perkins
Writer: Rob Hayes
Stars: Sophia Lillis, Samuel Leakey, Alice Krige, Jessica De Gouw

🎬 Have you seen this #horrormovie? What did you think?

Very disappointed! I felt it had potential but it just didn’t work.
That’s a fun distribution! Full disclosure, I’m listening to the episode despite still never having watched or read it. 😅
🎬 Movie Postmortem: IT (2017) 🎈🤡

🎉 Celebration: creepy nightmare visuals, Skarsgard as Pennywise, child actor performances
💀 Death: doesn’t feel like the ‘80s, not scary enough, weak ending
🧵 Stitch-Up: cut the Bev damsel in distress moment and kiss, remove part 2

Also, the blood spatter badassery discussion about these final girls made me think it should be two separate scores!
Great discussion! I really liked these characters even though I felt the film wasn’t entirely successful in what it was trying to do. As you said, it can feel like a cringy “debate me about religion” internet discussion at times.

In a way, it feels like an article or essay turned into a movie.

I feel James Wan should be on the list.
In our episode on A Nightmare on Elm Street, I discuss being a fan of Freddy even though I was too young to watch the film! 😅

Here is the Freddy vs Jason pic I mentioned. This was probably 1985 or 1986. Such a fun time. 🥹

Both of these low budget, found footage horror films were solid additions to the horror genre.

We did an episode on Grave Encounters back in May.

This is a film that I think fell short of its potential to rival the visual intensity and style of Dracula (1992). I still enjoyed it, but it just doesn’t have as many memorable moments for me.
I thought about seeing this the other day then decided I wasn’t in the mood for something so serious. It’s on my list for a viewing in the future.
Those films are interesting to me (as a scientist) because they helped shape the perception of what a scientist is like for a lot of older people.

It’s one of the reasons I love your project. Discussing how even casual pop culture depictions of scientists influences people is so interesting!
I never saw the first one, but the trailer for Black Phone 2 reminded me of A Nightmare On Elm Street. Made me even less interested in seeing it.
I would go for the creative combo for both of these! I actually haven’t watched Gremlins 2 in decades, so it would be fun to revisit.

I don’t even feel I need to have a reason to watch Coming to America again! 😄
