we use so many synthetic fertilizers and outside inputs to feed our lawns and gardens. at the same time, we literally throw away the nutrients that are cycling through naturally

People outside Alaska need to realize:
Typhoon Halong in Western Alaska has caused perhaps the first, big interregional climate change driven displacement in North America. We need sustained attention/resources on recovery to keep Halong victims from suffering as their worlds are turned upside down.
I appreciated national media covering it, but the headlines with just the number missing/rescued didn't get at it - nearly 2,000 people have been displaced from their homes. With the cost to rebuild, only temporary shelter, and no clear commitments from the feds/state to find a long-term solution

Proposal: instead of giving ChatGPT tens of billions of dollars to fail to create artificial intelligence, give me, an Actual Intelligence, a mere $10 million and I will gladly do a spreadsheet wrong for you from time to time for a modest fee.

i wish i’d never discovered “giving up.” before college that was just never an option and now i’m lowkey a lazy, fearful, avoidant creature that wants to flee when the work is too hard, or too easy, or too fast, or too slow

Reminder that your local foxing society will be re-commencing their annual meetings this month! They meet from dusk to gloaming in the spooky, autumnal wood. This week’s topics of interest will be yowling, yammering, and, of course, yippering!

more info about the environmental and social impacts keeps coming out to the point that i don’t even need to go for the “it’s fucking soulless plagiarized slop” argument of my heart

(especially colonized communities who never choose the system that they live under, which creates the conditions for their lifeways to be eroded and their communities to be displaced)
listennnn. i’m from alaska. by and large, i hate the government.

but this year has been crystallizing a lot of my thoughts about the needs government SHOULD fill. an instrument of authoritarian power vs. a distributive network that has deeply enshrined responsibility to take care of its people.
conservatives want the takeaway to be “what’s government good for? who even needs it?”

but large-scale crises are where centralized resources and aid distribution are needed most. looks like the future holds a lot of local organizing and re-inventing the wheel bc they’ve left us all in the dark
the state of alaska and local orgs ARE responding, but these communities are going to need a lot of helping rebuilding and, in many cases, relocating

these are native villages that’ve been sounding the alarm about climate change for years

we can rely on the fed gov to help in crisis less than ever
all we can do is help each other

as far as i can see, the federal government hasn’t even responded this disaster yet. trump can’t even be bothered to say something insulting or lob a paper towel for a photo op. his admin has already systematically defunded resources for these communities this year
