Good morning, now is as good a time as any to say, give what you can where you can. Whether that direct material aid or through charity. Locally or globally.

The underlying point of capitalism is upholding a social hierarchy that benefits a specific group of people at the top. Once you see that, the things that make less money but provide more control over others really start making sense.

This. It really cannot be stressed how much capitalists and authoritarians cannot stand the fact sex work isn't easily monopolized and can give marginalized people social and financial mobility in a way that defies their usual societal constraints.

Erotica and pornography is one of the few ways people with little means can gain some financial independence in the system, they want to end that so it's not a viable career for anyone but them. Theyll generate the smut, you can go work at the Amazon warehouse.

Hating musicals is often a toxic masculinity thing rooted ultimately in homophobia. It used to be fairly common, and there's still traces of it leftover in the culture.

I'm not firing on all cylinders and didn't realize this post was about actual dog collars until the second sentence. But yeah, unambiguously agree, that shit causes so much suffering and behavioral problems.

The recent ICE raid which emptied an entire apartment building was apparently at the request of Wells Fargo, which is trying to foreclose on the building.

( more writers should just be following artists in general because the distance some writers put between them and visual artists is one of the reasons why there's a big issue with AI in indie/self-pub spaces...just no solidarity )

Destroying the lives of pornographers while freely allowing ChatGPT to create adult content isn't hypocrisy--it's intentional malice. Companies want to be the sole purveyors in our ancient trillion-dollar industry that is porn, but they can only do that by outlawing anyone make it besides themselves

But this isn't unique to fandom; every skill field that AI can badly immitate is under a constant assault aimed at replacing workers and community with consumers and distilled exploitation. That front stretches from the writing rooms of Hollywood to awkward RP discord servers.
mishazgreen.bsky.social
And a big part of what makes fandom functional is that it serves as a sort of specialized community. AI replacing the artists and creativity will create an alienation that causes those communities to collapse. Reduced from inspired creative collaboration and sharing to endless consumption.
mishazgreen.bsky.social
...and an effort to reduce the number of people who develop creative skills. Because such people are then dependent on AI and don't compete with it.
mishazgreen.bsky.social
Which is even more insidious when you consider many original stories start out as fan works that evolve beyond their original inspiration. The marketing of AI towards fandom is both attempting to go where there is high demand for creative work and displace artists from that space...
mishazgreen.bsky.social
With fanworks, the goal is to replace paid fan artists and convince people to pay for fanart that they would otherwise create for themselves. If you can convince someone who doesn't know better that they can just let the machine write their fanfic for them; they never start writing.
mishazgreen.bsky.social
I also need people to understand that there is no creative outlet AI does not seek to commodify. Whether it's fan content or original works, the goal is to replace independent creativity with automated trashed: and to charge people for the privilege.
mishazgreen.bsky.social
But some of us do remember the last time the pendulum swung towards cringe culture and irony, and the associated harm it caused.
mishazgreen.bsky.social
All time and energy that could spent on the stories and work you actually enjoy if you just allowed yourself to have a preference.
mishazgreen.bsky.social
So you start looking for and inventing any moral failing in the people who don't validate your preferences. Often with a lot of weaponized social justice language, false accusations, and cherry picking along the way.
mishazgreen.bsky.social
But it all comes down to not being able to enjoy or dislike something without other people validating that preference. Not being able to truly give yourself permission to like and dislike things without justifying it.
mishazgreen.bsky.social
The fan protects this insecurity by attacking critique, evangelizing, and in some cases attacking other fandoms.

The anti-fan does this by elevating their own niche preferences and denigrating fandom. Establishing a sense of superiority, and a purity culture within their smaller social circles.
