Am I so deeply entrenched in tech that I'm unaware of alternate definitions for the word 'upload'?

The Internet may indeed be a series of tubes, but I'm not entirely sure they're big enough to accommodate a railway

I wholeheartedly recommend this book.

It filled in a lot of gaps and corrected a lot of my assumptions about how software engineering works at different levels and in different types of companies.
The Software Engineer’s Guidebook is now available as hardcover from Amazon. Here’s me holding the first print (the proof - it’s nice!)

And it’s also out as an ebook on the O’Reilly platform.

I can’t lie, I really enjoyed watching The Hobbit in 3D and 48fps.

I wish there was a way to watch it like that at home
Has anyone had any luck developing client-only apps for @atproto.com on localhost using oauth-client-browser? I set clientMetadata to undefined and log in, but I get a scope error when trying to call getProfile.

Have I missed a step, or is it a limitation of local-only, client-only atproto dev?

Feeling both exceedingly proud and very old after my 8yo trounced me by almost two minutes in this morning’s 5km race

I own Jaws at least 5 times on 4 different formats, but as soon as I see that it's streaming again I can't help but think "shit, I gotta watch that again!" as if it was my last chance.
I'm super curious to see what future-me is going to put on my best-of-2025 playlist. I'm not 100% certain, but somehow Sleep Token is likely to occupy the number-one spot which I *would* not have guessed.

NGL, I wouldn't have guessed that a *country* version would make this song listenable again in my lifetime.

My email address is 27 years old, it could be going back to its tenth high school reunion next year
I have an email address that is older than some of my colleagues.

My actual bones cried out in terror when I found that out.
Google putting their old-school logo on the homepage reminds me of a happier, simpler Internet that I wish we hadn’t lost.

I’m almost mad at Google for reminding me of it.

But shiny new thing!
Ahhhh, new pocket journals arrive and I immediately want to stop using the old one, even though there’s still 6 days worth of paper left…
30-day decluttering challenge Day #1:

A Lich King bust I printed when I was in the honeymoon period of 3D-printing everything I could think of

Into the bin it goes.
I feel bad for the bait-and-switch happening to folks like this who got to feel the absolute magic of making computers do stuff.

I wonder how many good ideas we’ll miss out on because creative, eager people give up when the magic is ruined by the broken promises of AI companies
I'm an eng at CK and that pretty much sums up the approach we took. We tried a bunch of stuff, keep what people liked, and moved on.

FWIW I found Windsurf worked better than Cursor for how *I* personally use LLM tools, but all various IDE forks are so similar that I barely notice most days.
FYI exploding e-readers and melting bed linens smoke a lot and don’t smell awesome
It’s been like 40 years since Don Norman wrote “The Design of Everyday Things.”.

Why are we still putting Pull handles on the Push side of doors??
