when I got diagnosed (as an adult) I asked the assessor what she thought of the idea that autism is increasing and she basically said the below. also parents realising they might be too when getting their kids assessed. the actual experts do not think there is some ~autism epidemic~.
Autism is on the rise because we're better at diagnosing it and the definition of it has broadened. Similar to when in the 1970's breast cancer diagnoses went way up because mammograms became commonly used.
