piracy is a completely aspirational problem for any author in america to have and i think anyone trying to stake out an anti-piracy position is a demon full stop

There's a reason everyone dunked on wendig for his archive.org takes and it is because he is wrong and so are all the anti piracy people.

Piracy is a massive net positive. It's one of few things the Internet has enabled that is absolutely without reservation a positive for the world at large.

frustrating that this piracy discourse is the same goddamn thing every time, has been for years, while discussion of exploitation of writers by publishers tends to remain very faint. it feels like this is a frequent steam valve for frustration, a group that can be yelled at without risking jobs.

A decade or so ago we had bloggers complaining about adblockers, now we have authors complaining about piracy. I realize precarity sucks but I feel like we should blame capitalism for that rather than people on the ground who can't afford to pay for media.

Well, it's my birthday. I've officially become 26 on the 26th. What are the odds? 1/26.

I dunno what it is, but every time I try battletoads, it gets its hooks in me for a little while. The worst beat em up you've ever played meets the most bullshit series of obstacle courses but there is something about it.

25 pirate downloads of your book is not 25 missed sales btw.

I am honor bound to support piracy in all its forms, and if I ever become a published author through some kind of bizarre twist of fate, I promise not to get mad if people who cannot afford the book are willing to pirate and enjoy it.

That is a mix I never knew I wanted. Like "The Colour Out of Space," but from an animal perspective. Love it.

Every once in a while, a leftist will try to bring some "smokers' rights" thing into the tent and I'm sorry but no, if you want to smoke, go outside. I have to choke on cigarette smoke often enough where I live because I share ventilation with smokers that at this point I'm fully anti cigs anywhere.

This whole thing was pretty funny though. Sometimes being lazy and slow to change works in my favor!
Turns out this was all much ado about nothing and Google isn’t using your Gmail to train AI and if wanna turn all that stuff back on you can get your spam filters back
Looks like the article has been updated to suggest maybe they misread the policy.

I see people complaining that this also disabled their spam filters, though I still see new messages showing up in spam so it's still working fine for me after disabling things.

Whenever a new crop of dumbasses starts in on the "you should have to have a license to breed" or "you have to get licensed to drive, why not require a license to vote?" I just think, man, what a fundamentally eugenicist country we are.
