In 2024, FJI and the Southern Legal Counsel sued St. Johns County over its anti-panhandling ordinance.

That lawsuit has helped to keep other counties and cities from enforcing similar laws.

Thanks to @jaxtoday.org for highlighting our work: @fji.law + @southernlegal.bsky.social "filed a lawsuit last year arguing that St. Johns’ panhandling law was unconstitutional."

#OTD in 1955, the Montgomery bus boycott began after Rosa Parks’ arrest. Black residents organized for 13 months until Montgomery’s buses were integrated in 1956. Collective action changed history. #TheMarchContinues

#OTD in 1965 the 13th Amendment ended slavery, but with a loophole; slavery was allowed as punishment for a crime. This marked the beginning of mass incarceration and the systemic oppression of Black people that persists today. Understanding this history is crucial to dismantling the system.

Drawing on first-person accounts as well as thousands of public records from the past 10 years, the SPLC’s new report shines a light on the root causes of violence and the alarming lack of accountability at Gulf and in the Florida Department of Corrections.

🧵 (1/3) Dave Lawrence is a legendary figure in #Miami who earns admiration and respect from everyone he encounters. The true measure of a man is the impact he's made on others.

That's why I joined hundreds of other leaders for a reception in his honor this afternoon at @loandepotpark.bsky.social.

🧵 (1/2) Recently, both the @miamiherald.com & @reason.com featured @fji-law.bsky.social's 'Wilson v. Dixon' case. Why it matters: #Florida is one of only 13 states without consistent access to universal air conditioning in its state-run prisons.
Reports show the heat index hitting 119 degrees inside Dade Correctional Institution. This is a serious health risk for people inside.

FJI is fighting in court because forcing people to endure this kind of extreme heat is cruel and inhumane.

🧵 (1/2) #FBF: I distinctly remember a teammate telling me he already made his travel arrangements because he knew we'd be playing in the national championship after our first @canesfootball.bsky.social game in 2001.

He, indeed, was prophetic in that prediction.

🧵 (1/2) When we're young, it seems cliché to go around talking about the things for which we're thankful.

As an adult, I've realized that not only is it not cliché, not much has changed.

I'm thankful for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
