What a quintessentially round dumpling of a robin! I was supervised very intently this afternoon.

Some Cornus winter interest (if that's not a cultivar name, it ought to be!)

Back to it in the beautiful surrounds of North Wales after a lovely couple of days away in Manchester to see Dirty Three in fine company.

Also after the Harlech Art and Craft Fair at the weekend.

A wander round sunny Manchester this morning before the trains home.

Thank you Dirty Three

Hello Manchester!

Harlech was being its usual ridiculously dramatic self. The Art and Craft Fair was a great success with its usual mix of high quality and sterling organisation.

Hopefully we'll see you next year.

A glimpse through the clouds at what might be, just before a thorough soaking to learn me.

A glimpse at the centre of a primrose, teasing what will be.

A glimpse of brooding Harlech Castle inspiring awe of what was.

Well, at least it wasn't that cold. It wasn't that warm either, but I'll take what I can get.

Another advantage of working in deepest Wales is that, even in driving rain, the scenery is breathtakingly beautiful.

Poor, perfect little chaffinch. I found him on the ground. He can't have been dead long.

It's a shame I normally only see birds up close when they've passed on. Except robins.

Blue skies and golden sunshine. Through the branches of a mulberry (Morus nigra) tree, and reflecting off Myrtle (Myrtus communis) berries.

A hopeful start, and visibility was excellent, all the way to Ynys Môn.

I was very closely supervised, as usual. I don't think it's always the same robin, but who knows?

Absolutely baking today...

Using the basic recipe for a Dorset apple cake, I made the first one with (stored, local) apples, as per the recipe. The second one I used defrosted blackcurrant coulis from the summer.

It worked. Well.

A first trip to the remarkable Llanfair Slate Caverns for their Christmas fair.

Also, met a barn owl!

Luckily the weather was sunny and considerably warmer than yesterday.

Close-up photographs of flowers: the frost report.

The end of the Cosmos. I don't think it's coming back from that.

Penstemon, still looking lovely.

Lonicera in the sky with diamonds.

Well, that escalated quickly. Ferociously frosty scenes this morning with frozen filigree on fennel, elder and artichoke.

I'm up to level 2 on the thermals.

Woke up to snowy mountaintops. Cadair was looking particularly fine.

One thing I like about sunny days at this time of year is being able to see the bones of trees. Oaks are especially branched and lung-like.

What a strange, changeable day. Am I cold, or too hot? Strenuous trimming and raking all adding to my confusion. I look like some strange forest hipster.

At last, a cold, crisp (dry!) autumn morning, like it's supposed to be. It was beautiful.

The long johns are on.

A cosy, solar powered light affixed to the shed so I don't prang the car when I get home in the dark. Also, more importantly, so I don't fall over. It also reminds me of the cover of 'The Green Light' that Kev made for me. Which is nice.

And it's nice again. I hope everyone is okay and is drying off after the deluge?

Back in sunny Harlech for Welsh rarebit at the castle cafe.

Another week, another storm. I hope you're keeping dry and warm?

Unlike me.

Here's a couple of pretty things in the rain. Water droplets on variegated Nasturtium leaves. Tiny little Sedum buds biding their time.

Wow, what a difference a couple of days makes. Sunshine breaking over Cadair Idris and my face illuminated by its munificent rays.

At least someone was enjoying the rain this afternoon. A tiny snail on this variegated Euonymus japonicus.

As soon as the rain stopped, another little friend was straight down. I think they wanted one of my tools to help digging.

Well, that's my last 5pm finish until mid-February. Although the pelting rain and heavy clouds wouldn't have helped light levels any.

There's a nice, autumnal view over the Mawddach estuary to Mawddach Crescent, before it rained.
