Hello, everyone! It's time I reintroduce myself 😊

My name is Melissa, and I am a Canadian military historian from Victoria, BC. Some of you may remember me from Twitter, but I hope to make Bluesky my new internet home! Follow me if you want to learn more about war correspondents, doughnuts, & more!
Devastated to hear of Tim Cook's passing today.

Dr. Cook inspired so many young historians in our field. He was always incredibly kind, generous with his time, and the biggest cheerleader for those working in history. He will be greatly missed by so many.

Very excited to share more about Canadian war correspondents who captured the Dieppe Raid as it unfolded.

Thanks @historysymposium.bsky.social for inviting me to join your spring speaker schedule!
Our Spring Series for 2025 has been finalized!

Very pleased to have our friend @melissawing.bsky.social come back to help us in April by sharing some of her thesis research on Canadian War Correspondents.

We get to look at the Dieppe Raid through their eyes.

Now that I've finished my master's, I'm excited to return to some of the projects I've put on hold over the last few years.

The first of which will be to go back and explore the history of First World War correspondents and the Canadian Overseas Press Mission in 1919. Excited to share more soon! 💁‍♀️

How do we feel about long-form threads on this corner of the internet? Should I do more of these or less?
Cozy November days call for historical boardgames 🎲

In March 1942, CBC Radio created the game "Carrying the Tools to Britain" to help the public better understand the scale of Canada's war effort and the industries affected across the country. Let's get into the game! 🧵 1/7

Today's #WarCorrespondentWednesday is all about award-winning Canadian Press (CP) correspondent Margaret Ecker.

Ecker was the only woman war correspondent for CP during the SWW and one of a handful of Canadian women who made it to the front as a verified journalist. 1/2

Such a wonderful project out of Western's history dept.

I'm currently helping 40 students individually research some of the postcards from Dr. Vance's collection as part of their course work in 1810E: Wars that changed the world.

(And working on one of my own, to boot!)

It's #WarCorrespondentWednesday!

Enjoy weekly photos, newspaper clippings, & sound recordings of the war correspondents I've encountered in my research. To kick us off, here is Canadian public relations officer Colonel Gilchrist with a group of Canadian war correspondents in 1945.

I am so excited for this book!

It was a course taught by @rachelcleves.bsky.social on the topic of food and sex at the UVic that introduced me to the fantastic history of the FWW Doughnut Girls - which was not only the topic of my MA thesis but has also become a lifelong side project of mine 💁‍♀️
