I'm Meggie, a queer nonbinary cartoonist from Michigan!

I'm the author of Batcat (book 4 out in April 2026), work as a graphic novel designer, and am tracking everything I read this year on Instagram and bluesky (I'm up to 290 books/comics!)

This thread is for October's reads:

Ok, since many people are obviously not reading the article, here's a pertinent figure from it showing the top actions to reduce emissions.
A horizontal bar chart titled “19 climate-friendly choices, ranked” shows actions individuals can take to reduce their carbon footprint, ordered from most to least impactful. The x-axis represents projected impact in tons of CO₂ equivalent per capita per year (tCO₂e/cap/yr), ranging from 0 to about 2.5. Each action is color-coded by sector: transportation (blue), energy (orange), and food (green).

Go car-free – highest impact (blue bar extending to about 2.5 tCO₂e).

Fly less (blue, about 1.5).

Shift to renewable home energy (orange, about 1.4).

Switch to EV or hybrid car (blue, about 1.2).

Go vegan (green, about 1.0).

Walk, bike, or take transit more (blue).

Make energy-efficient renovations (orange).

Use clean cooking equipment (orange).

Go vegetarian (green).

Shift driving habits (e.g., carpooling) (blue).

Increase telecommuting (blue).

Shift to regional/seasonal diet (green).

Move to energy-efficient home (orange).

Decrease food waste (green).

Eat less meat (green).

Use less energy at home (orange).

Reduce packaged food, dining out (green).

Use energy-efficient appliances (orange).

Compost – least impact (green, under 0.1).

A note clarifies that these are meta-analytic estimates of greenhouse gas reduction potentials, drawn from 659 estimates across 47 academic journal articles. The average person emits 6.28 tonnes of CO₂e per year, though this varies widely by income and country. Wealthier populations may emit up to 110 tonnes per year, while lower-income populations may emit as little as 1.6 tonnes.

#299 was Goblin Girl

I just read Buff Soul and loved it, and I think I enjoyed it a bit more than this one. This one was a bit slower and more meandering, and the narrative arc didn't feel as complete.

#298 was Tuck Everlasting: the Graphic Novel

Woodman-Maynard plays with typography and iconography to add new insight into a familiar story. Also totally stream rolled over my memories of the 2006 film and made me remember the actual book.

#297 was Froggy: A Pond Full Of Pals

Froggy leaves home for the first time and goes on a bunch of adventures!

If you (or your kid) likes Batcat, they'll like this book. There is an omnipotent narrator and a cute but sassy main character who meets a bunch of delightful pond dwellers.

Love that this is the way Oscar stands in front of her bed bound enemy. Just went out to pluck a rose and get a quick Brazilian blow-out before gloating.

#296 was To Shape A Dragon's Breath

If Harry Potter has disappointed you, read this instead. There is queer romance! And a whole new version of fantasy chemistry! And DRAGONS! IT'S SO GOOD.

#295 was Millie of the Manor

Amy loves a mystery but hates how her anxiety interferes with her life. When she's invited to a murder mystery party, Amy gets a chance to shine as Millie, scientist & murder suspect. Will Amy as Millie be able to solve the case before anxieties come rushing in?

I take it back…

I *DO* WANT TO BE A FROG.
Cover of the picture book I don’t want to be a frog, written by Dev Petty, illustrated by Mike Boldt. The cover is light blue with handwritten text in orange and green and the illustration of a very wide mouth frog with his hands on his hips and mouth open saying the words I don’t want to be a frog, the title, in a speech bubble.

It's a great audiobook because it's long but not boring, and there is a sequel!

#294 was Helen of Wyndhorn

Love me a classic standalone comic that has been drawn within an inch of its life. This is one that I would have loved to collect in installments, just so I could stare at the backgrounds longer and wonder how much the artist’s hand hurt.

#293 was Fox & Bunny

It's immediately evident that this was drawn by an animator, because you don't get nuanced character designs AND perfectly exaggerated facial expressions AND hilarious visual gags all in one package, unless that person animates. I wish there were ten more books.

292 was Buff Soul.

This art style is so beyond what anyone else is doing that it gets five stars for that alone. I can't wait to check out Goblin Girl so I can get more of this art in my eyeballs.

I cannot get enough of the Book of Dust by Phillip Pullman, it's narrated by Michael Sheen and he does every single European accent known to man.

I finished Alchemised (which I won't shut up about because it's 36 hours of my life I won't get back) and was deeply disappointed by the lack of gays.

SO: I'm chasing it with a reread of my FAVORITE magical school book, To Shape A Dragon's Breath. Brilliant, queer, with a sequel next year!!

It's still Banned Book Week, and did you know that hoopla has a tab of all the banned books that are available through your library? LOTS of good comics on there

#291 was A Guide to Manga Iconography, by Fumiyo Kouno

A cute, short guide explaining all the different manga symbols through comics.
meggietheramm.bsky.social
#290 was Crushing.

Honestly, I picked this up as a palette cleanser after Alchemised. A not too deep topical snack on love that feels more illustrative than comic-y.

#289 was Alchemised.

This is the 1000+ page Draco Hermione fanfic al la Handmaid's Tale and my big question after finishing is WHERE WERE THE GAYS? 36 hours worth of audiobook and not a single queer??

36 hours later and I FINALLY FINISHED ALCHEMISED.

I did not know what it was when I got the audiobook, but I do now, and now I also need a puppy, a Disney movie, and a shower because WOOF.

Only reading lighthearted YA for the foreseeable future...

Here's a thread of all the books I read in September! There were so many good ones, favs were A Far Better Thing, The Burial Tide, When Among Crows, Lu and Ren's Guide to GeoZoology, and My Sister the Werebeast!

It's fall on Spooky Island! If you haven't checked it out yet, October is the PERFECT time to read Batcat 3: The Cooking Contest!!
