My love language is being totally lost in a dungeon with half my party dead and a chance of taking a random encounter on my next step.

Don't Go Alone (1989) was a creepy dungeon crawling RPG by Accolade for PCs. With a modern, four-person ghostbusting party armed with weapons and the power of chemistry, descend down through a haunted house's ten levels where the evil Ancient One awaits! (a paranormal thread)

Gorgeous pixel-art, interactive worldmap, multiple races with many jobs, 300 optional missions, laws system forcing you to plan each battle differently...

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is peak!

They treat their game like it was born ex nihilo from the mad genius of a virtuoso creator, when more often than not it comes from synthesizing *decades* of knowledge of other games. E33 doesn't happen w/o Lost Odyssey, Legend of Dragoon, FF8 and SaGa before it but its fans won't touch those.

Always been sad to me how every time there is a breakout gateway RPG that brings in a fresh audience it's fans are the first to turn into gatekeepers of what the genre (that some of them just played for the first time) should and shouldn't be.

Yeah, I didn't realize how key Farmers were to the game's economy until like Stratum 2 on my playthrough. They are very much an early-game resource farming expediter, other classes can take over their role in the endgame (Subclasses help here).
mawxiwtz.bsky.social
Yeah! Combat Study is for those who sit back at the Guild so they can eventually sub in for as the situation calls for it. You can think of all these 3 SP Combat Study members as experimental fodder. Once they have their Subclass it becomes way easier to shepherd them :)
mawxiwtz.bsky.social
While we are memeing, make sure to fill out your Guild roster with 20 members who all put all their initial SP into Combat Study and leave them there to passively gain XP until they are ready to Subclass. Then swap them into your main team as needed.

That's fair. May get easier EXP-wise as you go deeper. I'm assuming you already have a Farmer with Earth's Bounty in your party to boost? As silly as this sounds, you can stack 4x Farmers with Earth's Bounty and have the new recruit train with them :P

Oh, Erik definitely is above me. Their FFV low level run was inspirational to read about. Don't think I could have pulled that off (still needed to be like high 50s for the Four Job Fiesta run I did) :P

Are you not shepherding? Give some good gear to the new recruit and have them sit in the back line behind the Fortress/Hoplite while you progress the rest of your party on the next stratum in sequence. If they survive even one fight, that'll easily be worth 1 - 2 mins of auto-grinding per fight.

One context piece you may be missing is by the time EO games got localized, JP players extracted all the data and posted it online so bilingual/import players had maps, build guides, skill calculators ready to go by NA/EU release.

This one was pretty handy: www.intothelabyrinth.net/etrianodysse...

Why is it a waste of time? Isn't what you are trying to get out of the experience an exploration of the design space they've mapped out?

put out a free archival release of most of my soundcloud music from 2011-13, from my PxTone work (the Cave Story synth) to stuff written circa-Anodyne 1, including a handful of piano songs, covers, etc. Meant to have this out in 2020..better late than never!

Just rolled credits on this and ... it's easily far and away my game of the year (unless Galaxy Princess Zorana also hits these peaks as well). Not only is it a heartfelt love letter to space opera anime but a deeply sincere and optimistic journey of being there for each other. Also there's cards XD

Laplace no Ma (1987) | RPG | PC and consoles | Group SNE and Vic Tokai

The PC Engine CD version in 1993 embellished the presentation and stuck close to its original PC roots letting players roll up a party of professionals to explore Weathertop's horror as a first-person, grid-based dungeon.
