There wasn't a single unit of queer or trans history taught to me in school. I had to learn it all on my own. The good, bad, ugly, and awful. We are the storytellers in this world. We are the keepers of stories, and ones who push the stories into the future. They cannot erase that.

It is unseasonably warm in SoCal today. Obviously worrisome with the ongoing fires, but in my little enclave it felt like spring. And I took in a few rays of warm air to simply exist in a small California town.

Yesterday was rough. Calling on my gay and queer predecessors who survived, marched, danced, fucked, and loved through a plague. Through times where neither Democrats nor Republicans were coming to help them. I am determined to live in a future where this is all a distant bad memory.

High winds are back in Southern California. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. These annual Santa Ana winds will continue to remind me of the fires, and this month in 2022 when the winds fell several large trees in my neighborhood. #photography #blackandwhitephotography

I’ve realized I’m essentially old hat watching a mass migration of TikTok users to whatever app is supposed to be the new TikTok. I come from a time when the prevailing thought was that social media is fun but real life is better.

So much of my mental energy this week has been on the fires here in LA. Three families I know personally have lost their entire homes. But seeing so many people support each other through this has been so incredibly moving. We have a long road ahead of us.

Just about everyone I know in LA has stepped up. Opening their homes, their pantries, their wallets, their hearts. People think it’s all fakes and phonies here, but really it’s a huge community of real ones. This is the true California spirit.
