We might be back up...
Please make your way all the way through this excellent thread.

It acknowledges the challenges we are all facing in education and gives a clear path forward.

It gives me hope.

And that is something I haven't felt in a while friends.
What we are seeing here, to me anyway, is the end result of the commodification and gamification of education.
This is not a "students today" post--it's more "this is a new form of dysfunction" that doesn't look exactly like it's been in previous decades. It's more than just "first-year chaos." It's an across-the-board inability to process instructions, engage with longer texts, and *connect* with others.

Multiple things are true:

I have students eager to learn whose enjoyment of reading has been drummed out of them;

I have students who want to write (& think) for themselves who become paralyzed at needing to do it;

I also have students who resist seeing my class as anything but a box to check.

There is a metric shit-ton of problems our society is facing, but I'd argue this is the one they pretty much all stem from:
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

As I've said before, the best thing you can encourage your child to be is a failed sports* coach.

*Men's football and basketball especially.
Former LSU coach Brian Kelly received a letter from LSU confirming that he was fired without cause and is owed “liquidated damages as required” under his contract of about $54 million.

4 should be 1

8 should be 3

1 should be 2

I will cede, however, that this list still qualifies hims for whatever he wants to run for.
haven’t seen ROS or Solo but this seems like a pretty ball-knowing list from Pritzker, particularly if he volunteered the name “Star Wars” rather than “A New Hope”

Really important to stress that the Crown Jewels of the US higher education system were never the Ivies or elite SLACs (other countries have equivalents of these) but the well-funded, large, cheap, and excellently staffed public state university systems bringing high quality education to the masses.
One of the bragging rights that the US ed system had in the 20th century is that we didn't have education tracks. Essentially, any kid could go to a CC or state school & major in whatever they wanted to (obviously an oversimplification). I fear this aspect of the American dream is dying.

If you can, make some time to read this if you're in anyway connected to a classroom:

Evergreen analysis of any Ken Burns documentary:
The central problem that emerged in Episode 1 of Ken Burns's new documentary about the American Revolution is that while he wants to integrate a wide range of voices and the historians responsible for this broader perspective, he refuses to allow it to disrupt a traditional and familiar narrative. 🗃️

As someone who teaches in a building that did this I hate absolutely everything about it.
Many districts in my area are going AP seminar (for all) in place of English 10 and not one book will be read. I teach elective AP seminar and there is no time for books. Some I have talked to mentioned maybe one short novella. It’s depressing. I teach 5-7 books with my 10th graders.
