HoD maths in London. CTeach, NPQLT, NPQSL, MA. Basically I love T&L and research. And KS3 and transition. And maths.

#EdD things: Why is my note taking/reference system so cursed? I don't think I should be using three different reference management systems, plus a google sheets, plus a notebook, plus a digital notes app.

And I still can't find the reference I need.

DIY INSET day today. As in, day off work to catch up or rest up.

Time to actually draft as much of my research methodology chapter as I can.

Anyone got any physical manipulative suggestions for equations of linear graphs?

I think one of the parts of my job I like best is curriculum design. I love the sort of infinite folding improvement of it. How you spot a problem, do a tweak, see improvement in lessons and results and keep adjusting.

In #MathsToday I did something a bit different with yr 11. Reteaching equation of a line I started with the concept that the line is the rule that links x and y and got them to give me different rules for (3,4) then different rules for (5,8) then the rule that fit both and then we did it formally.

In #MathsToday my yr 13s showed me an integral a day website they'd found and were having a go at. They are the best kind of students. Had to tell two off because they were doing that integration and they hadn't tried the trig ones yet!

A very civilised start to the day: homemade caramel latte and a little light reading on the post positivist paradigm.

Last week was tough so definitely need to look for some positives #weeklywins
- Full completion of homework from a group where previous week only 2 completed it.
- Surprisingly good understanding of AER in #coremaths, seems I’ve finally convinced them of the benefits of using percentage multipliers

The Batman effect: A female experimenter, appearing pregnant, boarded the train. In the experimental condition, an additional experimenter dressed as Batman entered from another door. Passengers were significantly more likely to offer their seat when Batman was present (67.21% vs. 37.66%).

#WeeklyWins because I need positivity after that yr 9 double....

One of my yr 13s found 2 marks I'd missed, moving him up to a B!

My yr 11 borderline class can factorise non monic quadratics and dubbed it "actually quite easy"

Up early enough with enough awareness to spend 20 minutes with an espresso doing some EdD reading (Research Methods in Education, which is my favourite)

My espresso machine broke at the start of the summer break. I've just set up my new one and my goodness, I'm actually looking forward to waking up for work so I can use it.

Mock Time for year 11s so also a fun time to make resources based on topics they struggled with!

Wrote a post about it here: chelekmaths.com/2025/11/19/e...

Some nice questions were made on the way #MathsToday

We took every topic across KS3 Geography, History, and Science and turned them into 10-15 minute academic reads. That's 140+ texts covering every aspect of those KS3 curricula.

It is time to ditch the video and put reading back to the top of the class.

I am stunned at my yr 13s recent mock results. This is the best the school has ever had by a long way.

All those weekly past AS papers and follow on work really have paid off for them.

One thing I miss about being a 2ic rather than HoD is the time to create my own exercises for lessons and craft really lovely investigations and question sequences. It was one of my fav parts of the job. Now it's all yr 11 data analysis time.

❤️ Love this ❤️

@mathforge.org has done what I’ve never been organised enough to do myself, and catalogued every #geometrypuzzle I’ve ever posted on social media. It looks amazing!

The day might have been long, the data entry frustrating, the busses delayed and grim, but I came home to rainbow gnocchi because the other half figured I needed it.
